Help with a video format question
Hey gang. I'm at work. We have some video files on our server that are in Quicktime format. They are .MOV files. They play normally on my Mac but not my colleague's Mac. I can't figure out why. Is there a way to find out what codec my machine is using to play it? I'll attach some info from the "more info" screen.
Thanks for any help

What error/message is your friend getting on his mac?

I'm not on my iMac right now, on a laptop PC. I do remember an add on codec-player. Something with a Swiss Army Knife Icon. I'll post when I get home.

Download GOM or VLC. They are both free media players that are awesome.

Re: Help with a video format question
Just wanted to let you guys know I figured it out. I copied my QuickTime folder from User/Library/QuickTime and pasted it on my colleagues computer in the same place, overwriting the folder on his machine. We logged out then back in and it worked! I had a folder in there called "AppleHDVCodec.component 2" that he didn't have. I guess he needed it. Just so you know, he did have perian (the swiss army knife icon) installed and we tried playing it in VLC but nothing worked on his machine. Now, after copying the folder, it does. I can only assume that someone who used to use this machine purchased "QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component for Mac OS X" at some point ( http://store.apple.com/us/product/D2187Z/A ) Lucky me.
Thanks guys,
Jonathan

Try it in VLC player.
Re: Help with a video format question
I second and third the VLC suggestion. Best player I ever used -- and if you watch DVDs on your computer -- it bypasses all crap and gets you right to the menu -- even if your standard set top player doesn't allow it

Yep, that's it. You had the MPEG-2 component; he didn't. If you have Final Cut Studio, the component comes with that, or it can be purchased separately.
The files should work in VLC as well though. It's not the most elegant player, but it can handle just about every media type known to humankind.

That would be Perian. That might work for MPEG-2 playback as well.

Why were there 3 posts offering solutions AFTER the OP posted that he solved his problem?
