I've had this gamecube for a year, bought it off ebay it was in tip-top shape. Use it only for the RE games about once a month, or so.
Anyway it's running fine except one big problem. The picture is incredibly dim. I have to turn the brightness all the way up to see any kind of picture but it's not playable. I've tried 3 or 4 different A/V cables and tried it on a Tube and a LCD television.
I tried my N64 with the same sets of A/V cables and it shows fine. So it has to be the gamecube. I've never heard of anything like this. Could it be something wrong with video output on the cube itself?

Since you already verified the cables and TV connection, it has to be the Gamecube console. The contacts inside the console output could be dirty. Unplug the power and clean with some alcohol, get the pins shiny. Luckily the pins are on one side, the bottom larger gap in the port at the right. You can also use the connector itself, a little alcohol plug and unplug a few times. Be sure everything is completely dry before powering back on.
A tight area to clean, QTips and Alcohol, dry before powering back on.

Re: Gamecube problem
thanks for the tips but it didn't do any good. Still a very dim picture. Shame too cause when I received this cube the seller said it had been played only a handful of times. It came in the box with the papers and was blemish and scratch free.
Guess I'll check the local gamestop for a replacement

Re: Gamecube problem
Be wary when buying any used GameCubes (or anything for that matter) from GameStop.
I bought one last year. It didn't read any discs. The gray analog stick on the controller was also busted. Now, I can almost understand if they didn't have the time to test the system, but it was clear to the naked eye that the stick was broken and they still sold it. Brought it back and exchanged it for another. This one works fine, but reeked of ass and cigarette smoke. Had to stick it in a shoebox with baking soda for two weeks. I don't shop at GameStop anymore.
I'd go with estarland or JJGames. You may pay more, but you know their shit is legit:

if he's shopping locally it's not like he can't actually, you know, inspect it himself first.
Re: Gamecube problem
If you get another GC, keep the faulty one for parts, since the only problem is the A/V part of the GC MoBo.
PSone, Xbox, PS2, DC, SS Mod Service, PM for details

Oh I know. GS keeps their GCs in boxes sealed with packing tape though. They will let you inspect the system, but get cranky about it (at least in my experience). Anyway, a visual inspection is no guarantee that the thing actually works.AppleQueso wrote:if he's shopping locally it's not like he can't actually, you know, inspect it himself first.
Re: Gamecube problem
I see no problem getting one from Gamestop, their job to let you preinspect the console before a purchase. Good to make sure all the pieces are there including a 1st party controller. They have a pretty good return policy on used merchandise. If it doesn't work, you can always take it back.
Be sure you get a Digital Port version, even though it will be an older model. This if you ever decide to invest in an expensive Component Cable later on. I actually bought a used Gamecube Component Cable from Gamestop around a month ago for FIVE DOLLARS! Yes it has its own Gamestop SKU, but a rare chance find.

Re: Gamecube problem
All I need is the console. I have 2 first party controllers, so buying another will just give me extra accessories to put in a box. As far as I know, and I haven't shopped gamestop in a while, they give you a 7 day exchange on used items, good enough to test is thoroughly.
Their website says they have 1 in stock about 5 miles from here. Sounds good to me

Re: Gamecube problem
Just make sure you test a variety of games when you bring it home. If that lens get TOUCHED that Gamecube is toast. Sometimes they will still read a few games after that. I had one that would only read Animal Crossing. Not that you need anything else
