So I finally bought a SNES

Post by Reprise »

Haha no doubt some of you get tired of these kinds of threads :P

But... I've finally bought myself a SNES (have wanted one for years). Got a decent couple of deals on Ebay and scored myself a CIB SNES and four awesome games. Zelda LttP, Super Mario World, Super Mario All Stars and Donkey Kong Country :D

Next I plan to pick up Yoshi's Island, Super Metroid and Secret of Mana. Unfortunately none of those seem too cheap, so will have to wait till after Christmas.

So, obviously I've read all the relevant Racketboy articles on the SNES, but is there anything else I need to know about the SNES? Any game recommendations? Particularly some quality cheap and unusual games too?

Side note: I own a PAL, unmodded SNES. So NTSC games only aren't really an interest to me yet until later.
Own: Mega Drive, Saturn, Dreamcast, Playstation 1, Playstation 2, Playstation 3, Playstation 4, Playstation 5, PS Vita, Super Nintendo, Nintendo 64, Gamecube, Wii U, Game Boy Advance, DS, 3DS, Switch, Switch 2, Xbox, Xbox 360

Rock n Roll Racing for SNES is so awesome (and the music is leaps and bounds better than the genesis version). It's great fun single player but is the most fun with a buddy.

SNES is one of the greatest systems ever made. The only system that I personally like more is NES. I'd recommend getting a Game Genie, which are pretty cheap and allow you to cheat in your games, because some of those SNES games are punishing.

As for some game recommendations, here you go:

Action/Adventure:
-Actraiser (combination of side-scrolling action, and Sim City-esque sim-building, strange sounding, I know, but it really works)
-Contra III: The Alien Wars
-The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (the BEST Zelda game, IMO)
-Mega Man 7
-Mega Man X 1-3
-Super Castlevania IV
-Super Metroid (the BEST Metroid game, IMO)

Beat-Em Ups:
-Death & Return of Superman
-Final Fight 1-3
-Maximum Carnage (Spider-Man & Venom)
-X-Men: Mutant Apocalypse (the best beat-em up on the system, IMO)

Fighting Games:
-Mortal Kombat 2 & 3 (MK 1 on SNES was edited with no fatalities or blood)
-Samurai Shodown
-Super Street Fighter II

Platformers:
-Donkey Kong Country 1-3
-Super Mario World (the BEST Mario game, IMO)
-Super Mario All-Stars (collects all the NES/Famicom Mario games)

Shoot-Em Ups:
-Gradius III
-Phalanx
-Raiden Trad
-Super R-Type

Other:
-Ninja Gaiden Trilogy (collects the first 3 games from NES on one cartridge)
-Sim City
-Super Mario Kart
-Wolfenstein 3-D (PC version is better, but this version is more convenient if you don't want to mess with DOS boxes and compatibility)

Indeed, I have played Chrono Trigger via emulation and I'd agree it's one game that would be worth the high price. I'd love to own it one day - perhaps if I ever get a DS/3DS I'l opt for that version though.

And yes, I have a Mega Drive.

Edit: Thanks for the game recommendations BurningDoom :)

Congrats! You're about to experience the best console to ever grace the earth. In addition to what BurningDoom and dsheinem recommended, I also recommend:

Action-Adventure:
- Legend of the Mystical Ninja

Platformers:
- Demon's Crest (made by Capcom, very similar to Mega Man series)
- Super Ghouls & Ghosts (a very different feel than the Genesis version)

Fighters:
- Street Fighter II Turbo

Shooters:
- Contra III
- Super Turrican
- Pocky and Rocky
- Zombies Ate My Neighbors
- Super Smash TV
- R-Type III
- Space Megaforce

RPGs:
- Final Fantasy II (aka IV in Japan)
- Final Fantasy III (aka VI in Japan)
- Breath of Fire
- Breath of Fire II
- Secret of Evermore
- Soul Blazer (RPG-like)
- Illusion of Gaia (RPG-like, sequel to Soul Blazer and much better)
- Ogre Battle (expensive, though!)
- Lufia and the Fortress of Doom

Other:
- Super Bomberman
- Pilotwings

Well congrats, you're starting out with four of the best SNES games! My suggestion would be to not buy any more games for a while. Spend some time with these games, especially LttP and Mario World. You can spend a lot of time in those games just exploring. Zelda, for obvious reason, and Mario World too (finding all the exits and secret stuff). All Stars is the greatest video game collection ever. And DKC is one of the best platformers on the console, and possibly any console. Though when you're done with DCK, you must, MUST pick up DKC2 and 3. Most agree that they are superior to the original.

Have fun!

I agree with Ziggy; don't be in a big hurry to pick up more games. Appreciate what you have and you'll enjoy the system a lot more and save money as well.

Have you played a lot of Gameboy? I really like playing the games on a Super Gameboy sometimes.
