Playing Thunder Force VI.

Holy hell this is hard. TF V kind of disappointed me, the visuals really threw me off. It was okay but nothing special like the previous games, which are all greatness. But yeah there's minimal lag, visuals look sharp, good OST, and it's very fun. I love the references to the Genesis TF games. For example there's a lava level kind of nodding it's head at Gorgon from TF III, the mini-boss is the end boss from the Gorgon stage, those two robot things.

One thing weird about it is that you start with all 5 power ups and can't lose them. I guess it's kind of cool in a way but I like collecting power ups. Since the game is so damn hard I suppose it's welcomed. Kind of like a send off to the series, letting you have a fully powered up ship for the last TF game you'll play. I heard that once you beat the game you unlock a mode/difficulty that employs classic collect power up gameplay though.

One last thing, the enemy and level design really reminds me of the Mega Man X games for some reason...

I've been playing ESPgaluda on MAME over the last few days, I'm really liking power-up-bullet-absorption-thing-mode mechanics.

Batrider on MAME, Galaga 3 & Exed Exes on various "Multi" units at the arcade I frequent.

Great series on the Genesis. Too bad SNES gamers back in the day (like me) were stuck with Thunder Spirits, which wasn't all THAT bad, but more like a taste of what Sega gamers were getting in a wider series.

Batrider is fantastic. I have played the pcb very little, but someday I will have a cab with this in it.

I've still got a lot left to delve into with Garegga anyways, so I shouldn't get started on Batrider.

Yagawa sure can make a good shmup.

Ever tried Giga Wing or Mars Matrix? Or did I get that wrong? They have "reflect barriers" that bounce enemy bullets BACK at them for more damage.

One game that does absorb enemy bullets for extra bomb stocks is Grid Seeker by Taito, it's available on Taito Legends 2 collection, and it's quite fun.

An all SHMUPS cab? Would make it a bit difficult, if you were a fan of horizontal scroll ones too

RAIDEN FIGHTERS! Good times. Played it on this one cab years ago that had a real messed up screen, you couldn't even see the score, but I loved all the hidden bonuses. DEFENDED THE HOUSE! DISCOVERED THE MICLUS! KILLED THE FAIRY! (oh wait that last one wasn't too good)

JUDGE SPEAR (aka Viper Phase 1) was my ship of choice!
