Because it is free and because the majority of the people I play with are on PS3. I have paid for Live on a per-month basis when there's something I want to play with the few friends I have on that service.s1mplehumar wrote:Is that because the online play is free?dsheinem wrote:My rule of thumb is that if I want to play a console game online, I get the PS3 port. That said, even though 360 ports look better most of the time, Sony's first-party games are easily the prettiest games of this generation from a graphics standpoint.
I won't dispute your statement concerning Sony first-party titles. I can't wait to start the Uncharted series.

I see. Do you find yourself hitting any snags with lag? I know XBAWKS has dedicated servers, but I haven't heard too many folks grumble about their PS3 online experience.dsheinem wrote:Because it is free and because the majority of the people I play with are on PS3. As far as I know Xbox Live games do not use dedicated servers for multiplayer games. There may be a few exceptions.

I have found no more or less lag with either service, it seems to be mostly game dependent...s1mplehumar wrote:

Hmm, I know Gears of War does. I know Call of Duty and Battlefield do not. Maybe the high profile FPS stuff isn't dedicated?ZenErik wrote:As far as I know Xbox Live games do not use dedicated servers for multiplayer games. There may be a few exceptions.

Re: Comparing port differences in the PS3 and 360
I find my habits are the opposite. I buy almost all multiplayer games on 360 due to my preferece for xbl and my friends list. I use the ps3 often for single player games, exclusives, and games like FFXIII that are more native to th PS3.

Re: Comparing port differences in the PS3 and 360
Most games are console-first these days, with the PC port being based more on the 360 version than the other way around.ATARI800XLfan wrote:It would also seem that games that were originally developed on PC hardware translate better to the Xbox 360 then PS3. Sonic Generations would be a good example.
That said, PowerPC architecture aside, the 360 still uses DirectX, so folks used to dealing with PC code are likely more familiar. Still, IMO, it speaks more to MS keeping their hardware simple for developers. The 360 is suited better for "generic" code, so to speak. The PS3 only really shines if the developers are taking the time to optimize for it, which 90% of the time is only on exclusives, though the occasional game slips out that's clearly better on PS3 (Castlevania Lords of Shadow, FFXIII).
Anyway, another resource for this type of thing can be the native rendering resolution list on Beyond 3D here. Things are usually pretty much the same, although occasionally there are differences (FFXIII runs at a lower res on the 360, SFIV lacks AA on the PS3, etc). It's a quick list to check anyway.
More generally it makes for an interesting comparison to PC versions, and puts console performance in perspective.

Re: Comparing port differences in the PS3 and 360
The main reason it is better is that it does not have any framerate issues or slow down like the PS3, also some of the textures look better, and since the framerate runs smother the controllers feel and work better to. Just a few of the reasons.ZenErik wrote:No idea. Just read a few earlier posts in this thread.noiseredux wrote:"better" how?ZenErik wrote:I didn't know Sonic Generations was better on the 360. i dont know if im a fanboy lol, but between the xbox and ps3 i exclusively buy games on the ps3 no matter the genre. It could be i have more friends on psn or my preference of the ps controller....

A suprisingly large amount. Most big FPS's, Gears of War, some sport titles, others.ZenErik wrote:As far as I know Xbox Live games do not use dedicated servers for multiplayer games. There may be a few exceptions.

One big reason that most games are better made on 360 (not trying to say anything here, just calling the facts) is that it is the leading system. That puts more attention on it, and then it gets ported. Optimized for different systems, might not work as well on the port.
Oh, and Playstation controllers are shit.
Systems: Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, N64, Gamecube, Xbox 360
