This game was the first Zelda game I played, several, several years ago - around 1999 perhaps, so I guess a bit after the game came out?

A friend had the original B&W gameboy (I guess not the DX version?) and he lent me his gameboy and his 5 or 6 games. One of them was this gem.
This game is absolutely amazing, really. I still remember vividly the Ballad of the Wind fish (whales are not fish, but anyway). Remember we are talking about a Gameboy's sound - the music is really that memorable.

I love this game more than any other game that exists. It was one of the first video games I ever played. I borrowed it and a Game Boy from my cousin one day when I was just a kid and it BLEW MY MIND. Little brain nibblies on the wall behind me sort of thing.

It opened my eyes to the idea that games could be deep, complex, and challenging. Prior I had only played Mario Bros., Duck Hunt, Punch-Out, Tetris, and some racing game. It was hard as hell (since I had no gaming skills at the time), but I trudged through and LOVED every second of it. Marin was the first and only game character I've ever loved. It took me SO MANY tries to beat the final boss, and when I finally got to see the ending I just started crying. I'm honestly getting teary eyed just thinking about it.

That game put me through the whole range of emotions. It hurt so bad when my mom (who had very strict violence rules up until I finally broke her as a teenager) later on wouldn't let me get Orcale of Ages/Seasons because she saw a sword on the front of the box. Had she known about Link's Awakening, she never would have let me play it. I got really involved in portable games back then because she wouldn't see what I was playing.

I've never replayed it since and don't know if I ever will. It was just one of those experiences.

still to this day my favorite zelda game.

too bad the modern games don't make world exploration as important as in this game.

I finished this game last week. I found all of the bosses to be pretty easy except for the final one. I had to redo the battle several times before I figured out the tricks. In his final form, he was swinging his arms around and periodically opening his eye. You had to shoot the eye ut with the bow and avoid the arms. Initially, I was just running around, avoiding the arms but it was tough to do that and get a shot off at the eye. Then I figured out using Roc's Feather to treat the arms like jump rope. I thought that was a cool idea.

Now I'm playing Oracle of Seasons.

One thing that annoyed me a bit was having to go to a sub menu to switch items. It wasn't much of a problem though except for the parts where you needed to do a running jump or other complex stunts. I ended up not using the shield as much as I had wanted to.
I thought it was a bit more difficult to get around. You didn't have something like the bird to carry you from one point on the map to another. Sure, there were a few warps but they didn't cover the whole board. It probably wasn't a big deal since the overworld was smaller than the one in LttP.

Casting a rez spell on this thread, since we were talking about this game on the other thread.

Why do you guys think most people don't remember this game when they talk 2D Zelda? I specially hate Retro Game reviewers and sites who seem to forget that this game was just as good as its console counterpart (smaller doesn't mean not as good. Plus a lot of things it did were pretty new for a Zelda game).

I wouldn't say it was better than Link to the Past, but it definitely and easily held its own. I can certainly understand anyone putting this over LttP, just not me personally. Btw, bonus Color Dungeon on DX version (and it's awesome, awesome "dungeon" music ;) ) ftmfw.

The most advanced and best game on the GB/C hands down to me. Nuff' said.

Awesome story too. It leaves a lasting impression on anyone's who has finished it for sure.
