Nice job on the list and videos. I'd like to find a nice, affordable 3DO bundle one of these days
Thanks.

Also samurai showdown was the best version besides the Neo Geo ones of course, which are either expansive or have slow loading times depending on which console you get, This version is just as close and neither expansive nor does it have slow loading times.
There is really NO Neo Geo version of Samurai Shodown that is expensive. The NGCD version is super cheap. The AES version is even super cheap (should never be more than $25, if that). I can't imagine the MVS version being expensive.

Even the NGCD version doesn't have bad loading times.

Sorry, but everyone of your points here is moot. I suspect you don't have any Neo Geo hardware and really haven't looked into it much?

I do like the 3DO and currently have both an FZ-1 and an FZ-10 with a few dozen games, but I thought I should point out these inaccuracies about the Neo Geo.

I did own a Neo Geo AES but sold it because of cost, I currently own a Neo Geo Pocket Color and am currently thinking of getting one of the CD systems(can't decide which version).

I find the AES nice to own just to say "hey, I have a Neo Geo AES." The older games ARE affordable, but the mid-life games do start to get out of range for the average collector. Of course, the later games sell at completely insane prices and are only affordable for serious collectors who buy them because they have enough disposable income or feel they are an investment.
Okay, I understand then, in your opinion which version of the Neo Geo CD is best, from a value and cost point of view.
The top-loading model is best using your criteria. It is the most common and therefore easiest to find. It is also the cheapest. The CDZ model is quite expensive compared, and has a hardware flaw where it is prone to overheating (which results in a frozen game or the system shutting off after some time). The original front-loading model looks the best, IMO, but it is fairly uncommon to find (only 25,000 made, as you mentioned) and therefore a bit more expensive than the top-loading (but still less than the CDZ). Functionally, it is as reliable as the top-loader. Both the front and top loaders are fairly reliable, although there is always a worry about the CD drive components, as with any retro CD-based system. The front-loader also has the loading mechanisms, which is another part to worry about (although I've never heard of this being an issue).

My favourite is the front-loader, because it looks awesome. That's the one that I own. It is VERY bulky, though. It's nearly the size of the original X-Box.

Since this is a 3DO thread, I guess I should recommend the best 3DO model:

Panasonic FZ-1 (front loader): Best! It's solid, fairly easy to find and looks awesome.
Panasonic FZ-10 (top loader): Very good! Fairly solid system.
Goldstar(LG) model: Meh. Looks cool, but not as reliable as the Panasonic models.
Sanyo T.R.Y.: Looks freaking cool. I'm not sure about relyability, but it's Sanyo. They usually made decent stuff in the 90s (where Goldstar/LG was... of lesser standards then).

i don't think there are even 10 good reasons to have a 3DO. "it's just neat" doesn't count. and i've owned two of them. the system always felt very clunky and underpowered to me.

Clunky and underpowered?

Did you just try the Goldstar model? The Panasonic ones are as solid as any console. Not sure why said underpowered either... it came out in 1993 and this is a retro game forum.

i've had both Panasonic models. the FZ-1 was the worse of the two.

and i just mean it felt like it didn't have the power to support the things it was trying to do. it felt like a sega cd trying to run a saturn game, if that makes sense. everything controlled very awkwardly, from fighters to shooters to rpgs to FMV to racing games to whatever. i just didn't care for it, i guess.

and i'm aware this is a retro game forum, thanks.

Thanks, what is a fair price for the front and top loading Neo Geo CD unit's. Is it worth the extra cost for the front loader. What are some must have games in your opinion for the system, were there any CD games made after KOF 99? As for the person who said the 3DO is underpowered just check out Need For Speed. Also before anyone says that it is slow it is not, the game is just more sim based then the Saturn and PS1 versions. Also thanks for the advice on the Neo Geo CD. I think I am going to get one, for some reason ever since I sold the AES I have turned into more of a hardware collector then a game collector. I always seem to buy just a few games then move onto the next console and I think you have helped me notice why. I am trying to make up for selling the Neo Geo AES. So I will buy a CD instead, now that I have remembered why I fell in love with the system in the first place, a company that made a game system for a niche market and where happy with that instead of trying to beat Nintendo.

I guess the "underpowered" comment surprised me, but I think you've explained why you said that now. :)

I agree that in a lot of game, the controls felt either a bit loose or delayed. I guess you view the 3DO as kind of a rickety old car?

precisely. maybe i'm just not willing to look at it through rose-colored glasses, but i just don't think there are enough reasons to justify even playing one, let alone own/collect for one. plus the amount of bullshit software for it is staggering.
