Confession: I own two RE games, but have never played either one for more than half an hour (I was really just testing to see if they worked, as I bought them used). Think I may have to try them out now. This Jill Valentine character looks....... nice.

They are amazing and have aged well in my opinion, controls and all. Haters gonna hate. Hit up Dino Crisis 1-2 as well.

They're not too long either, lots of extras though if you want to get a lot of mileage out of them, but I love marathoning the games back to back so you could probably do that with whatever two you own. They're all kind of standalone too. I know it makes no sense whatsoever, but I played RE4 first, then RE3, RE2, and RE1/REmake ... yep. It honestly worked out pretty well playing them that way story wise.

I grew up playing the earlier ones at my friends though back in the day, just never owned them myself until a few years ago.

Woah, that's so weird... I played them as they came out. One of the franchises I've been with since the very beginning. That explains your love for RE 4 though.

Don't get me wrong though, I love RE1-3 to death! In many ways I wish RE4 played like the originals or that we got more new ones like REmake/Zero. I just love all old survival horror games with that control scheme (Fear Effect was kind of wonky though...), I still love RE4 but it really does feel like a spinoff at best. I can definitely say I'm not a fan of the Los Plagus plague or whatever though, the zombies/mutations and viruses in the originals were cooler. Not to mention RE4's story is just kind of random, but Leon and Ada are awesome.

Finally playing RE2 for myself years ago was a real treat too since I remembered playing that one the most at a friends house in grade school, some of the later scenes I remembered so well it was a nostalgia bomb.

But yeah maybe next time if you revisit the games play RE1-3 backwards, haha. I seriously can't even explain it or argue why, but yeah it just worked out in a really weird way. It was very cool getting to know Ada in RE2 then learning about her backstory off some of the notes from the labs in RE1.

If Mikami were still around with them I'd say a game with Ada would probably be awesome, but he's not. So please never touch Leon and Ada again Capcom.

I find it really weird, but also very refreshing how your views and experience has been with Resident Evil.

Personally I have grown up playing the series from the beginning and basically playing/beating all the games in order as they came out. I really like/liked Resident Evil for what it was but recently I have really been turned off from the franchise. Its good to see someone who loves RE4 and who played it first actually appreciate the older style, and designs of the franchise.

To me, Resident Evil 1, 2, 3, Code Veronica and to a lesser extent, RE 0 are the best RE games and basically are everything that is great about the series, and how I think the series should remain.

Resident Evil 4 was a great game but it really didn't look, act, or feel like a Resident Evil game at all. You really could of taken Leon and Ada out of the game and added slight alterations to the storyline, and it would of been a perfectly good stand-alone game. Obviously adding the RE franchise to it helped with popularity and was a good selling point but I really don't like how drastically different it was. There was literally nothing scary about the game at all. Everything was so fast paced and action packed. Resident Evil has always been about atmosphere, suspense, survival, and most of all; zombies. This game had basically none of the ingredients of a good survival horror game.

All traditional Resident Evil complaints aside, the game was very fun and worth playing. Too bad the same can't be said for RE5. Basically if you take out the entire formula for a good survival horror game, and then take out the good aspects of RE4, you get Resident Evil 5. I got this game for free when I bought my Ps3. I tried to play it two separate times in the two+ years that I've owned it and I just can't get into it. The game is fucking awful.

To sum it up, Resident Evil 4 was very different but at least it was a great game. The shittyness that is Resident Evil 5, combined with the just awful "movies" really hurt my love for the series. Plus Capcom clearly doesn't know what the fuck they are doing anymore so I have basically lost all faith in the company, and I didn't have a lot left from the recent years.

Well like I said I actually have fond memories of playing RE2 at a friends back when it was new, but yeah. When I finally got them myself and played them through from start to finish, I definitely went completely backwards on the whole franchise ... haha.

The atmosphere was amazing in RE3 with the city, reminded me a bit of Half-Life 2 perhaps, and then RE2 oh man... it gave me Metroid vibes because you just kept going further and further underground. I couldn't get enough of the vibe. First game is great too, and if it means anything I played both RE1 and REmake back to back and enjoyed both for what they are, the dated RE1 didn't bother me at all and it just had a lot of charm. I officially have yet to clear Chris' story though, his extra limited inventory is a little annoying.

It was probably just destiny that I'd love the old games to death, even if RE4 never happened I probably would've gotten to them someday. Always read in magazines or reviews people would bash the controls and camerawork, whelp I had zero issues with that stuff even going into the series after RE4 and as a "newer fan" I guess you could say. Then I hit up Dino Crisis, Parasite Eve, and I plan to check out the other PSX/DC games like this stuff someday.

As for RE5, I'll just simply say I agree on your thoughts 100% there. :D

...Nothing scary or suspenseful? Not even the laboratory on the island? The section where you're fending off the uh... zombie replacement guys that are swarming in on that cabin?

I found plenty of moments in RE4 to be quite intense and heart pounding, it's definitely got its horror moments, even if it's a completely different kind of horror than the old games.

For the record, I played REmake and Code: Veronica (along with several other horror games) long before RE4.

Yeah the hospital/labs on the island were pretty intense.

I would say the RE games in general are not that scary at all to me though, they just have good atmosphere. Nothing compared to Fatal Frame if we're talking scare factor, but that's me.

Good to know. The ones I have are 3 (PS1) and 4 (GC). I've heard good things about 4 so I may start with that.

Do it. Hopefully you have the same experience as me, enjoy that one, then go back and enjoy the classics.
