That's kinda funny, as 4 Songs was the first LP I bought with my own money. 4 songs is an odd record, it's a one sided 12" that plays on 45 speed. At first, I mistakenly played it on 33 1/3 and thought I had bought a sludge metal record!

On a related note, a large amount of my vinyl is Wax Trax! stuff from the late 80s and early 90s when if you liked 'industrial' you could pretty safely buy anything they put out and like it. My first Doubting Thomas release was the 12" for Father Don't Cry.

Now I loved Wax Trax, but they had a real problem with quality control in the art department for a few years around 1990. Lots of stuff would have wrong labels and such. This particular EP was labeled 33 1/3 on one side and 45 on the other. Being a Skinny Puppy side project without Ogre, there were no vocals, just some samples which it was expected that they'd be sped up, slowed down, and generally screwed around with. I listened to this EP for quite some time before I got the album and discovered that the song that was on both should have been 45, not 33 1/3. When I got the EP on CD years later I discovered that the other side had been wrong too. Amusingly I liked the fast side better slow and the slow side better fast.

And on that note I'm firing up the Wax Trax! Black Box comp.

I love Waz Trax!, especially Ministry, Revolting Cocks, Coil, Laibach, and tons more I'm sure I'm forgetting. Never owned any of their vinyl though.

Funny we got to the topic of record speed. Last night, I was reading some scans of old hardcore punk zines. Bad reviews were generally given to bands who got soft, turned rock 'n rock, lost their edge, etc. At the end of each negative review the reviewer would add something like "Just play the record on 45 RPM instead of 33 and it'll sound as good as the old days!" lol.

I kind of wish I still had the old wooden turntable/radio that was my stereo as a kid. It had 16 and 78 speeds on it too. Turn anything into hardcore or dirge.

All these years I thought the guy behind Fatboy Slim (Norman Cook) was that fat guy you see at the end of the 'Right here, right now' clip.

Turns out I was very wrong...



Had the same thing with Fumiya Tanaka a few years ago.

I actually thought the woman on the Mix-up volume 4 cover was Fumiya Tanaka.

Turned out Fumiya is a guy...
