another one that looked better was Star Fighter. While the textures on the Saturn and PS1 might have looked slightly better they also had horrible draw distance and fog while the 3DO version did not. Also there were little things in Wing Commander III that did look better then the PC version like the screen inside the fighter was just green when you squad mates talked to you on the PC. On the 3DO they were fully colored. The 3DO version of Wing commander also had the missing cut scene were Hobbes left a message for the commander explaining why he defected back to the enemy.

Star Control II is better on 3DO compared to the PC. IIRC it has full voice acting.
I believe Megarace had better quality sound on the 3DO.
Other than that I can't think of anything that was definitively best on 3DO.

That is correct.dsheinem wrote:I did not know that! I guess that it is the exclusive English version, at least?BoneSnapDeez wrote:Actually Lucienne's Quest isn't an exclusive either, there's a Japan-only Saturn version (Sword & Sorcery).
Though if you can speak Japanese I would recommend the Japanese Saturn version which is about $5-6 bucks, compared to the American 3DO version for $100 or so. Great game.

Star Control II was best on the 3DO. But since UQM came out, you can use the voice data from the 3DO version.
Road Rash on the 3DO is still the best version of any edition of that game.

I think if he did give you a compelling reason you would again find a way to disagree. For instance how is the PS1 Gex better than the 3do version? Maybe you like passwords but I like saving. There are many things that can make a version superior, to me I like playing on TV and not a computer so PC versions will mostly not be better to me. Its the same for the xbox360 which has few exclusives when you add in PC. Also on your system comparisons are you going by personal experience, did you actually own all the versions you listed?dsheinem wrote:I disagree.ATARI800XLfan wrote:off the top of my head the top 10 were either exclusives or the best versions.dsheinem wrote:which of these 51 are exclusives?
which of those that aren't exclusives are the best available version of the game?
10. Casper - SAT, PS1 (I have no idea which version is best)
9. Novastorm - PS1, DOS, SEGA CD, FM TOWNS (DOS is the best version)
8. StarBlade - SEGA CD, Starblade Alpha (an enhanced version) on PS1
7. Space Hulk: Vengence of the Blood Angels - PC, PS1, SATURN (all of which were after 3DO port and run/look better)
6. Another World - ported to everything. Chahi has stated he doesn't like the 3DO port
5.Track and Field:The Need For Speed(originally released on 3DO first, best looking) - best looking? based on what? certainly the PC version is the best looking, and I don't see many differences in the PS1 version upon a quick comparison.
4. Gex(also first released) - first, but not best. The PS1 port is superior in almost every way
3. Luciennes Quest - an exclusive.
2. Wing Commander III( There is Mark Hamil) - PC version is best, and PS1 version runs better
1. Doctor Hauzer - an exclusive.
Sorry, I am not trying to rain on your 3DO parade but I would love to have some compelling reasons to pick the system up. I owned one at one point and got rid of it, something I didn't do lightly and without delving into the library. I just don't see the system as having any superior ports and I don't find the exclusives to be compelling at all.
But in truth, I doubt there is anything anyone could say that would convince you to buy a 3DO again. Part of liking a 3DO is wanting PC games on a console.

You can use Dosbox to emulate an older computer.ATARI800XLfan wrote:nor do I own a computer old enough to play dos games, so to me it has the best versions,

I could do that though for one the games I want do look better then the DOS version or having parts missing from the DOS games, plus I prefer not to use emulation when ever possible.General_Norris wrote:You can use Dosbox to emulate an older computer.ATARI800XLfan wrote:nor do I own a computer old enough to play dos games, so to me it has the best versions,
Re: Best of 3DO thread/top 51 games.
Road Rash has a faster framerate on the Saturn version, but it is missing the building shadows from the 3DO and PS1 game. The PS1 game is dithered but has slightly higher quality/louder music. I have comparison media posted here.
The Need for Speed is seriously faster on the Saturn and PS1 versions, while the PS1 game is dithered again. The 3DO game is so much slower, speed wise, framerate is fine, that I consider it a different game that focuses more on simulation.
Total Eclipse and Total Eclipse Turbo is an interesting comparison as well. I can't be sure but the 3DO game seems to have much higher color textures and effects than the PS1 game.

Re: Best of 3DO thread/top 51 games.
I won't lie, I was going to get a 3DO during the console saturation era of the mid 1990s, which redefined the gaming landscape as we know (ie consolidation of competition to only a few big players). But what Matsushita pulled out of the M2 game I knew 3DO was doomed.
The system isn't interesting, most of its games are better ported/coded on other systems.

Nice job on the list and videos. I'd like to find a nice, affordable 3DO bundle one of these days
