Should I promote people first? What's the pros/cons of doing so?
don't promote magic people until level 20.
don't promote fighting people until level 10.

when you promote them effects how much they will gain with each level including which spells they will learn in the case of mages.
cool

anyone have a tough time with this fight? This is the first one where I feel a slight bit frustrated... :x

I think you are having the battle against General Elliot. I don't remember it being hard, although the boss is a tough guy. Tough bosses that counterattack often and for a lot of damage can be quite tricky (this can be quite the problem in Fire Emblem where counterattacks are automatically present)!

You get to clash at the middle of the field with only some of the enemy units sent forward, then can mop up the rest and then pile everyone on the boss. Can you be more specific about the problem you had? I assume it is the boss itself causing you problems but maybe it is something else.

On Promotion:
You should probably hold off promoting people until level 15 or so, and if you want to learn more spells then wait until 20. When you promote them they actually LOSE stats (this is unlike Fire Emblem), and in my case almost all of them only started to recover after level 5 post-promotion (but then they often had significant jumps in stats). A very important issue is that unpromoted units can not equip advanced weapons. For most of your non-magic units that matters quite a bit for their Attack stat (and for special ones such as Max, which has offensive spells but is mostly melee - still I only promoted Max at 20 anyhow).

yeah I figured he was talking about the Elliott battle. Really it's just waiting for the troops to come West. Kill em one by one and then pigpile on the boss.

I finally got past it (and the rest of the fights in Chapter 4 - which were a breeze by comparison). It was a good "training" battle because I had to think much more about positioning, items, etc. than I had previously. Now on to Chapter 5!

Hmm, not sure what battle that was. Was that the one where you were kind of stuck at a bridge SE? Not sure...

I'd also advise like I said earlier, to promote people kind of in groups or one at a time later on. Like Ivo said when you promote people their stats drop quite a bit back down and so they're a bit tougher to train again until they get a few levels in. I'd imagine if you promoted like your entire group at once that'd be a nasty situation in battles for awhile, lol. So I'm kind of carefully doing it and letting my other guys continue to gain a few more levels before promoting them. Max I'll probably promote at 20, and I guess it sounds like a good idea to do that with the magic users.

Was on the greyhound coming back to Montreal and was playing the entire time. Right when I'm about to finish the battle against the Master Mage, the bus arrived. So there I am getting off the bus, and sitting back down in the terminal for another 10min to finish the battle.

I don't think I've done that for 10 years.
