Sega CD Repair

Post by seanami »

Got a Sega CD from someone, was told all it needed was a simple fuse repair.

Looks like something blew, I cannot read what part it is its so bad. Anyone have an idea what part it is? And if this is fixable?

Almost every capacitor is corroded making it hard to read. Anyone know a part number and if its able to be replaced? The corrosion looks kind of bad

If this isn't fixable is it possible to gut another non-working Sega CD and part them together?

Thanks

The green stand up item on the left of your second picture is likely the fuse. See if there is continuity. If not, then it needs replacing. Those capacitors look like they're all toast and C64 is missing. It is likely that all of those can capacitors need replacing which is what I had to do to get one running again for someone else. It should be fixable, just will take some work and cleaning. Though hopefully nothing else is toast around that scorch mark.

Whomever said this just needed a fuse was either misinformed or a liar. I mean at the very least it's obvious that one cap is missing.

Yup, big liar.
Do you happen to know the specs for a replacement capacitor?
Not sure what C64, CWhateverExploded, and C23 are suppose to be.
I am also worried that the corrosion might have damaged the board at C46.

On the board, items labeled R## are resistors and C## are capacitors. C46 is very likely to be the same value capacitor in spot C45 in the same orientation. If the pads are damaged, should be able to follow the trace to a good spot on the board and run a jumper wire if needed from that spot to the leg of the capacitor. C23 looks like it might be a small surface mount capacitor. If you carefully clean off the mess it might be easier to tell what's there or see if there's a label for a component that's gone.

Unfortunately I don't have a model 1 Sega CD, I had just fixed one for someone else. The capacitors have their ratings on them though.
