At this point i have no clue what exact direction i am going to take all tho it seems i would have more of a selection in media brand as well as write speeds if i use full sized DVD's but that seems like a long shot at this point at least until i can come up with another GC shell of some sort
Don't touch the pot at all, unless you have problems reading burns. And even then, you might wanna try a different brand of media before you try adjusting the pot. And if you do end up adjusting it, make VERY small adjustments at a time, so it's just enough to read the discs.

I wouldn't bother with the full size DVD case. Mini DVDs are cheap enough, I just searched Amazon for "mini DVD" and found a 50-pack of Ridata for $20, a 20-pack of TDK for $12, and many others. If your burner can't burn as low as 4x, then just replace it. You'll end up with a better burner.

My DC and PS2 burns have all been at max speed, and I have never had a single issue. Is there any guide on burning backups? Just curious as to why slower is better.

They're all just CD burners unfortunately.

You're just lucky then. It all depends on the media you're using, how well your burner performs (and with the media you're using), and how well whatever it's being read on can read the discs. I've read some people say that if you're using good brand media and your burner is decent, there's no benefit to burning slower. Some people say that, in this situation, you're better off burning at whatever the fastest speed is. Don't know how true that all is though.

Some people can't burn too fast and have some of the older consoles read the discs. It might be crappy media, or that fact that the older drives have trouble reading the burns, or a combination of both. I wouldn't be surprised to hear that some shitty burners don't do a very good job burning either, and crappy media wont help this situation. But I've also read that even a good burner might have trouble with certain good brand media.

My PC Engine burns also worked just fine while burning at max speeds, BTW. Much older than a DC or PS2. :P *shrug*

Again, the brand media you're using + your burner = good burns for you.

That's cool. I was gonna do the same thing. I have one of those drives that can read Gamecube and Wii discs, so I figured I'd turn it into an external USB drive so I can use it on any computer and possibly lend it out if some one needs it.
