Media Burn Speed Question

Post by korn16ftl3 »

ok so i now have a Viper GC extreme in my Game Cube, how ever it seems damn near impossible to find a GC shell to fit full size DVD's now days.

suppose every one advanced to the wii but me i hate the wii and <3 my GC, but any who i figure id try to burn on mini DVD-R discs and that price on them has probably dropped dramatically. i found a stack of 50 mini DVD-R's on Tiger direct but they are only rated for 4X burn speeds and my DVD burner on my laptop does not burn that slow it burns at a 8X minimum thus leading to my question:

can i burn media faster than the media rating?

i guess the question is kind of irrelevant as i am some what being forced to go this route as the full size DVD lids are so hard to locate but i figured it wouldn't hurt to ask about the media burn speed ratings

for any one interested the media i am looking into buying is:

possibly BUT i would never burn a game faster than 4x bc the laser has to strain to read the game. try burning a music CD at 8x then at 52 and you'll see the difference.

the burn speed does not bother me as much as the 4X limmit on the disc that i can not burn at

i burn most games at 8X and dont have any issues

I have never heard of a DVD burner having an 8x minimum speed. Very odd. There are plenty of 4x rated discs still out there.

I suggest just going ahead and burning it and then trying the disc out.

I've found that the gamecube is one of the most fussiest when it comes to burned media. If you find that you have trouble with the Viper reading the disc, try booting up GCOS (which can be put on the Viper GC memory). I've found that GCOS would have better compatibility with burned media.

I agree. I have Sony and Memorex mini DVD-Rs and my Gamecube doesn't like one of them (the Sony IIRC). I had another Cube that I chipped and sold, which needed a minute adjustment to the pot to read the burned discs, even though it read retail games perfectly. Of course, these aren't big problems, but compared to other consoles, it is pretty fussy.

This. Drives are so cheap right now, it's ridiculous. You can get a brand new DVD+/-RW off Amazon for like $25, just make sure it burns at the speeds you want.

You're not gonna get hate on this forum for sticking with an older console. I love my Wii, but I do in fact have a chipped Gamecube nonetheless. And PS, I've only ever burned to mini DVDs.

LOL i dont think many consoles can match how fussey the sega CD is holy WOW i figures out how to burn them flawlessly but dude that system sucks to burn for the only program i could get that was free ware with all the need'd options to burn a Sega CD game flawlessly was Burn At Once :/ but hay the point is i got it functional no off beat audio or any thing.

well im asuming that is the issue every time i try to burn any thing slower than 8X in Img Burn it says write sped misscompared wanted 1X or 2X or 3X or 4X ect got 8X so im assuming my burner is not capable of burning at any thing slower than 8X thus the misscompare issue

shouldbe easy enough the DVD/CD burner i was using for the Sega CD games i think supports slower speed just need a USB to SATA enclosure the rig is pretty much scraped that it was in any how

i have no clue about the GC and its media pickyness as of yet i only installed the chip...havent even pot adjusted the system yet i just set the lid back on top of it until i figure out exactly what kind of solution i am going to come up with (using a full sized DVD shell mini DVD's or come up with a spare shell to make my own full size DVD case). At this point i have no clue what exact direction i am going to take all tho it seems i would have more of a selection in media brand as well as write speeds if i use full sized DVD's but that seems like a long shot at this point at least until i can come up with another GC shell of some sort

Find one that someone is maybe giving away for cheap or tossing because they upgraded. I have a bunch of old CD burners that were free because they were old. Pretty sure they all work just fine.

If anyone needs an older slower CD burner for their retro needs, let me know.
