The Game Boy's screen was green and yellow but most of the emulators I've used display in black and white. IIRC, LameBoy has an option to display in green and yellow.
original DMG GameBoys have a pea-soup light reflective film behind the LCD to provide contrast for the black pixel layer that makes up the screen visuals. Mostly due to the rise of chiptune music and especially LSDJ, there are many kits now that you can get to replace that with any color filter you want, from just white (to make it truly black and white) or neon hot pink. Better still, since the GameBoy LCD is passive reflective, it can even be backlit. All of this requires a bit of modding of course, but yes, a stock system is suppose to look like that.
As others have said, that is what it is supposed to look like. As for the missing vertical lines, that can easily be fixed with a soldering iron or a hot air gun. Mine started doing that earlier this year and I fixed it with my soldering iron and a little bit of cardboard to put some pressure on the connections once reassembled. There are lots of Youtube videos out there that show how to do it.
I have a second generation original gameboy (green color) that the screen doesn't come on at all. Is this typically a caps issue? When I first got it (I got it for free off Freecycle), the screen did come on but then it stopped working, even with fresh batteries. The red power led does come on.
I have not taken it apart yet to see what the inside looks like.
