What to Add to Games That Pushed the Limits of the GB/GBC?

Post by racketboy »

We're in the middle of expanding/revising the Game Boy / Game Boy Color guide to the games that pushed the technical limits of graphics and sound.

Here's what we've got so far -- any recommendations on additional titles? If you can give some reasoning, that would be very much appreciated!

Donkey Kong Land (series) (GB)
Faceball 2000 (GB)
Chikyuu Kaihou Gun ZAS (GB)
Shantae (GBC)
Project S-11 (GBC)
Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare (GBC)
Cannon Fodder (GBC)
Ottifanten Kommando Störtebeker (GBC)

Pokémon Puzzle Challenge was pretty impressive sound/music-wise.

I wish I could find a quality upload of that song, but hopefully that will do for now. Just the combination of music that's used in it, along with the plethora of background sounds.

I certainly think all three Zelda GB/C games are worth mentioning for a main entry in the article, graphically, musically, everything. Goes without saying.

The Megaman Xtreme series came out in like 2001, regardless of being a very late series for the system, it's still very technically impressive.

And the remixed music from X-X2 was so well done it was insane.

How about X? It has quite impressive 3D graphics for GB.

Wendy: Every Witch Way is a very pretty platformer on GBC. Wario Land 3 is very pretty too, as is Toki Tori. Perhaps they're not quite what you're looking for though.

Honestly, I think the entire Pokemon series could be included. The amount of programming tricks they used to make those games fit on those tiny carts is amazing. Especially with Pokemon Gold and Silver.

I don't quite remember what's on the list already, but in addition to what's been suggested (Shantae takes the cake above and beyond anything else)

In case anyone here hasn't already read, it I wrote a 2top 25 GameBoy/GameBoy Color games list a while back and I think it's relevant to this thread:

Anyway, my nominations are:

Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare (visuals, but the game itself is complete crap)
Cannon Fodder (visuals, technical production)
Daikatana (visuals)
Donkey Kong Land 1 (visuals, audio)
Donkey Kong Country (visuals, audio, technical production)
Dragon Warrior III (visuals, audio, technical production)
Faceball 2000 (visuals, but the game itself is crap)

Pokemon Trading Card Game 2 Team Great Rocket (visuals, audio, technical production)

Wendy: Every Witch Way (visuals, technical production)

I'm seconding Warlocked on GBC, which Satoshi mentioned above. It immediately came to mind. It's basically a handheld Warcraft game on GBC and a damn good one. Here's the music I remember most fondly:

X is like Star Fox on GB.

Face Ball 2000 as early FPS on GB, plus utilized a lot of multiplayer.

Wendy Every Witch Way was already mentioned.

Scooby-Doo Creep Capers, Addams Family (EUR) and Fish Files (EUR) are all impressive little GBC adventure games with graphics that look much better than they should.

(I'll keep adding to this as I think of more)

I think Alice in Wonderland is in the same tier as Shantae and Wendy.

Maybe I'm not very knowledgeable, but I always thought that the sprite rotations in the battles of the Golden Sun games were pretty phenomenal.

And while Yggdra Union was pretty standard, the way the cards were summoned looked really cool, how the cards were rendered to rotate and such.
