Can I just go from SCART to VGA?

Post by Jamisonia »

I recently got a free projector from work that wasn't working, that I got working again. The projector features M1 and VGA inputs, along with composite and s-video. If I wanted to connect a video game system VGA to this projector could I simply use a SCART coupler and SCART to VGA cable like the one linked to?

I'm not worried about breaking audio out.

wouldn't you need female SCART on that? also do you know if that SCART is EU or JP standard? finally, you need to make sure the console sends sync data down the same pin that the VGA sends it to the monitor.

Sometimes, not usually. Depends on the monitor. Most SCART consoles use sync rates or low-res video modes VGA inputs often don't support.

Pretty much this. If im not mistaken, VGA is 480p or higher 31kHz while a lot of 240p stuff is 15kHz. So a line doubler/scan converter would probably be needed.

A great site to read up on what you might need, heck you can even message the site owner Fudoh. He should know what to do.

M1? Thats a new one for me.

>some< projectors will take component over VGA with the right cable, but you gotta research your projector. I think you're gonna end up getting a XRGB or some RGB->VGA convertor if you want to use the VGA input on your retro consoles. Nothing wrong using the composite...plus it'll save you money. 360 will work, but PS3 does not support VGA.

I went through all this when I picked up a freebie projector also.

M1 is very similar to DVI, and its fairly common on Infocus projectors.

All the M1 cables I always find are converting M1 to something else. I know that the Infocus projector can take RGB signals over the M1 and the VGA ports. However it doesn't address getting SCART sources into it, although it supports both PAL and SECAM formats, and progressive and interlaced sources.

Pretty much this. SCART and VGA whilst both being analogue RGB signals aren't compatible with each other for the simple reason that the clocks don't match. You'll need a upscanner/converter to convert that signal to VGA. You can get them pretty cheap but don't expect the quality to improve (in fact it will probably look worse).
