Ok so I pretty much have the same problem with my 40 gig playstation 3 not reading discs but after some googling I came across a "fix." The fix only lasts about 15 minutes so I still have the problem and hence the quotes.
The "fix" is going into safe mode and choosing the third option restore system files. After that it will play a disc like normal for about 15 to 20 minutes at most then my game will just freeze. When I restart the blue light showing that a disc is in the drive is on but the game doesn't show up on the xmb.
I am wondering if anyone has any clue or suggestions. If I can't get it fixed I'm thinking about just trading it in at gamestop and getting a slim or if I have the money keeping it and buying a slim.
definitely not doomed, definitely ready for some custom firmware and replacing the HDD with a much much larger one.
I've had a 60gb launch PS3 for a while and last year snagged a 40gb for super cheap that was "broken". Slapped a 640gb HD inside, "jailbroke" it with psfreedom (the solution at the time), and started loading it up with games. Now I simply run 3.55cfw and don't need a "dongle". I love this thing. Uncharted 3 is coming down the pipe right now.......

You're fucked, hope that something comes from the current leaked metldr, although on first analysis it seems unlikely that it will have keys for higher than 3.60. Even the 'latest' dongle exploit is only for 3.6 games. It's unlikely that we will see an exploit for current firmware for a while.
I actually went to my friends game repair shop and got a new drive for the price of free I just did all of the work which was incredibly simple the only problem I had was the 2 wires attached to the drive board were a pain in the ass and clipped one disconnecting a board. Now I just need a SATA drive.
So next time someone has this problem and finds this thread get another drive it is a simple fix or get you some CFW if you are running 3.6 or under OFW.

I was under the impression that bluray drives were tied to the motherboard and you couldn't simply just swap them. When did this change?
I am going to butcher the explanation because I am horrible with technical stuff like this but I will try my best...
From what I did you are half right. There is a board attached to the drive that has to stay in your system. As long as you put your systems drive board on the new drive it is fine. It is a fairly small board about 2x4 inches so I am pretty sure it isn't the motherboard but like I said I have no clue. You have two ps3's I suggest taking one apart to see what I mean or just google some pictures I'd post some but I am feeling lazy sorry buddy.
On a separate note I am selling mine to my roommate when I move out at the end of the month and getting a slim 160 gb any idea how long it takes to transfer data using the ethernet cable method? I really don't want to deal with borrowing someones external hd just to transfer my stuff.

Oh of course. I even said it myself earlier in the thread. I must have been drunk or tired (or both) when I wrote that reply. Sorry for the confusion.

No it's not doomed. If you find out the firmware (system, about) then you might be able to install CFW and be able to boot games from the HDD. Bypassing the need for a disc drive altogether. Not only that but you can now marry other logic boards to the system so that it will still work. All you need to find is a PS3 BDROM drive that has a faulty laser/assembly but a working logic board and just marry the two. Easy.
In fact you don't even need CFW to do the above, only if your logic board is fried. There are tools in the scene that allow you to use any PS3 BD drive in any PS3 with CFW, after all, it's just the same service tools that Sony use when they refurbish broken PS3s. If the logic board is still sound you can just swap them over.
HMMMMMMMMMM!!!! this is a good idea. I think I'm gonna keep an eye out for PS3's with broken CD drives. My current one is modded, and it's kind of annoying since I can't go online.
