Plug a CD player into the left side RCA input, leave the Saturn plugged into the right side, and turn off the in game music.

Well, in most games you wouldn't be able to do what you want too, but yes, you would still have sound effects.

The Saturn would just be outputting to one speaker (in this case, the left side). Most games let you turn the music off and keep the sound effects on.

Think it would depend on the game, since a lot of the games used uncompressed redbook. Some would use PCM, but if you could burn a disc with your choice instead of the audio tracks, I think it would work. The game you're playing would reference a track number for the audio while it loaded the game from RAM. Worth a try. Let us know if it works.

I did this with TGM3 on the pc. The audio files are WAV so I converted the Tetris Plus ps1 OST to wav and it now has that. Blasphemy, I know

I did an old school version of this many years ago. GTA on Ps1 loaded the game and then read the disc for audio tracks. I pulled out the disc and swapped it for a music cd. It worked. Stealing cars listening to my choice of music...

HAHA! I actually just did this! I copied my US Sonic CD's ISO and replaced the soundtrack with the japanese soundtrack. It freaking works!! You gotta use the Sega Cue maker and img burner. I accidently made a few coasters because I forgot to convert a few files and make the .CUE file. I love it!
