I would recommend approaching it like a generic shoot em' up. Collect weapon pods as you would powerups. Probably the most unique feature in the game is the ability to choose between the three different ships. They are completely different from each other and it really changes the flow of the game.

I am in the same boat as you regarding MUSHA too... sadly, since I just dropped munniez on it
EDIT: I do have to say, though, that both of those games have some nice tunes.

I'm very tempted to pick up the new Xbox 360 game tomorrow: Otomedius Excellent. Looks like a cross between Gradius and Deathsmiles.
