Yup, I agree with Flake. Some GBA comparisons would be especially nice

Maybe someone can explain something to me. I am technically impaired:
I understand how GCN games bumped up to 480p look better - as they were designed for that and anything less is (usually) pulling the quality down to match your cables / maximum output.
But GBA / GB games were definitely designed for a low resolution screen. But when you put them on a GB player with composite cables, they look pretty good. With S-Video they have some weird purple interlacing. But on a component connection the games look insanely vibrant, better than the actual GBA screen, imo.
How does that happen?
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

Maybe because the actual GBA screens weren't that great to begin with?
Also, with component you get better color separation

I think that's why I am confused - If the screens were bad to begin with, why are the games better on component? It's like you were painting a masterpiece knowing that the frame would obscure 20% of the image. Even the games that were made well before the GBplayer came out look fantastic on component (Circle of the Moon comes to mind).Weekend_Warrior wrote:Maybe because the actual GBA screens weren't that great to begin with?

How does color separation work, anyway?

Outside of Nintendo's own titles, I could probably believe this. 'm always impressed by how good wind waker, luigis mansion, mario sunshine etc look when I play them now, and I mostly play wii. Thats not to say all wii games are ugly though. I like how stylised and colourful a lot of them tend to be.emwearz wrote:I find a large number of Gamecube games look by far better than Wii games, I put it to the system being so amazing when it was out, people were trying to push the console. However with the Wii being so weak compared to what it was competing against, developers just did not bother. Why push a system and put in all that extra work, just for the game to look 5 years old.
The reason my Wii will always remain plugged in, even after I get a WiiU, will be to play Gamecube games via Component.

Gamecube at 480p is truly awesome. The only games that look like crap are resident evil 4/realistic looking games.
My set-up is 50'' panasonic plasma/dvdo edge
I however do not use the DVDO edge for GC component as I find it unnecessary on my setup. DVDO edge does add some ringing at times.
Also keep in mind even if you scale to 1080p, the tv still has to process it. YOu might gain less input lag if it is faster than your tvs upscaler.
I on the other hand have been going back to CRTs. I love the scan lines, picture quality, and no input lag.
It sucks that we never really got a multi-sync crt. There are some like the NEC but they cost an arm and leg or arcade monitors.
HD crts should've been multisync instead of using line doublers like all the sony wegas do.

Nice pictures. I would also like to see some gba games in component as I'm not impressed with how it looks through s-video.
Re: Gamecube Games in 480P (Pictures)
GBA games don't look much better in component. There's really no saving the GBA.
As for Resident Evil 4, I was disappointed that it was letterboxed instead of anamorphic 16:9 on the Gamecube. It was anamorphic on the PS2. Letterboxed instead of anamorphic means less vertical resolution and it is quite noticeable.
