Tried that, didn't work. Nothing looked dirty actually.

Thank you, very much. I will definitely try this. What did you use to put the pad back with? The original adhesive clear-sticker thingie doesn't look like it will reseal.

Looks very fragile under there. Check out the flex circuit traces and see if there are any cuts in it. Mark in any gap with a circuit writer pen, let dry and protect with not scotch but transparent tape.

If you are really mod nuts, try a a gutted game controller PCB and buttons. Epoxy individual PCB pads and mount the buttons on top. The tricky part is following the flex circuit traces back to a solder point for each two wire button and if the game cart overlay button will align with the mounted buttons.
