Is getting a Neo-Geo worth it?

As awesome as it would be to own one, any Neo Geo system is at the bottom of the list for me. If I miss out on Samurai Showdown RPG, so be it. I think I'd get a 360 or PS3 before getting a Neo Geo system. Then again, I'm just not that big a fan of most fighters.

Windjammers, Metal Slug, Neo Bomberman, great, but still...I'm willing to MAME the good ones if it means I don't spend hundreds of dollars for the best games.

Windjammers is $20-30 on the NGCD. Metal Slug can be had for $50 or less if you shop around. You can also get a few puzzle games, racing, FPS (like The Super Spy or Nam) and beat 'em ups for also for pretty cheap. NONE of those have really bad loading times. They are all in the Sega CD/PS1 loading time range.

Seriously, I really do think the NGCD is not a bad deal if you just want to get a few good NG games!


If you are the type of guy who wants to say, "hey, I have a Neo Geo" and also have a few good games for it, without spending a ton of money, the Neo Geo CD is a really decent choice.

If you want a very large selection of the top games and not refinance your home, get an MVS.

If you want the actual AES and a large selection of the top games, get a car loan.

$70/80 for 2 games is more than I'm willing to pay. Others with a bigger pocketbook may differ, and I wouldn't begrudge them at all, but for me that's a bit out of my price range.

Yeah, but those are really the most expensive in my book. The rest can all be had for less ($5-20. The more you hunt, the cheaper!)

The games themselves play, in mostly every case, 100% identically.

Advantages of the Neo Geo CD:
-CD quality audio. Sometimes this is very nice!
-Content, I think a few games might have extra content, but I'm really not sure about this.
-Cheaper, by far
-There are a few exclusives, but really not many. I think it's in the single digits. The most notable is Samurai Shodown RPG, which is Japan-only.
-The controller ports are the same as the AES, so you can use any controller you want.
-S-video built in.
-Plays back-ups.

Disadvantages of the Neo Geo CD:
-The Neo Geo CD games stopped production sometimes in the late-90s. As a result, you won't find the latest releases on the AES/MVS on CD (think KoF 2002, SVC Chaos, etc.). -Load times. I find them tolerable on the older games, but absolutely insane on later games (like Lade Blade 2.... WOW, it really is THAT BAD).
-In a VERY FEW cases in later games, the CD versions miss a few frames on animation here due to the CD cache not being able to hold everything that it would need to. In most cases you wouldn't notice unless you did a side-by-side comparison. These are, as I said, the later releases that you probably don't want on CD anyway because of the really bad loading times.


Basically, if you just want stuff like Metal Slug, Windjammers, Twinkle Star Sprites, KoF '94, '95, '96, Samurai Showdown I or II, Fatal Fury 1, 2, Special, 3, Real Bout, World Heroes 1, 2, Jet, Baseball Stars 1 or 2, Football Frenzy, Puzzle Bobble, Magical Drop, NAM '75, The Super Spy, Sonic Wings 2, Ghost Pilots, Blue's Journey, Magician Lord, etc., you will be fine. Those are the games I think of when I think of Neo Geo anyway. If those are the games you think of, they all have tolerable load times AND are affordable (well, TSS might be a bit of money. Metal Slug is often $50 or more).

When I scored my AES for the steal I did, I was ecstatic. I have wanted to own one of these consoles for years. This is the Ferrari of the gaming scene guys, either you can afford it or you cannot. However, this is the reason why all my friends jaws drop when they see that I have one!

Also, I may be possibly spending quite a lot for a secret game I am keeping my eyes on, or an AES copy of Gunlord. These games are an investment and hold their value extremely well.
