Good games that teach Japanese?
Re: Good games that teach Japanese?
Yeah, I actually felt kinda bad/uncomfortable watching that, but couldn't stop watching until the end.

Have you seen "Byakuyako"?. It's the best drama I've seen, and I've seen many. Holy shit, what a fucked up story. As a bonus you get to see Haruka Ayase in every episode.

Reading manga would be great for learning Japanese too. Many of them have furigana (small writing above kanji that tells you how to read it), and you have very nice pictures to help you learn from the context. And best of all, they are fun to read so it doesn't feel like homework.
I haven't read that much manga myself, but I would like to. I don't have the space or money for a large manga collection but I have always wanted to own a complete collection of the One Piece manga series.
Anyone know of a place I can buy One Piece manga from? Ideally they could ship to the USA, but Japan would be OK too. I can use a forwarding service if need be.
*edit*
I searched the web and ebay and found them for $7.21 per volume (final price, includes tax and shipping). That's pretty decent. Anyone know of a way to get them cheaper? I know almost nothing about buying manga.

Yeah, Manga is a great way to increase your reading speed. As mentioned, pick up manga with furigana so that you can learn to read kanji faster. Some publications which are geared towards Japanese learners also do this. They'll have articles in Japanese with furigana above the kanji as well as the entire article translated in English on the next page. The best magazine that does this is Hiragana Times.

^I use manga with furigana and damn is it nice to have around. It really helps the kanji stick to actually see it in practice. I'm lucky in that I have a Mitsuwa less than an hour away which has a grocery section, an interior book store, and a video rental store, among other things. It's unfortunate that a lot of the manga there geared towards an older audience doesn't keep the furigana, but that's kinda to be expected.

Ah! I think I have one of these fairly close to me too. I totally forgot. I should go and check it out sometime.Czernobog wrote:I'm lucky in that I have a Mitsuwa less than an hour away which has a grocery section, an interior book store, and a video rental store, among other things.

I made a new topic about the One Piece manga. Hopefully more people like Czernobog will see it.

There's three in southern Cali, but I don't know if they're just the grocery section or if they have additional stores in them like the one out here. There used to be a huge anime vendor section in the one here, but it sadly couldn't bring in enough revenue and the vendors eventually stopped setting up.

I eat lunch at Mitsuwa at least once a week since it is only about 5 minutes from where I work. Usually the video stores inside sell DVD-Rs of Japanese TV shows for a dollar a pop. It is worth it. They are usually a couple weeks behind but they keep you up-to-date with the latest in pop culture.
Also in my area Comcast has a free Japanese channel (not Japan TV). I totally didn't know about it until I was channel surfing one day. They broadcast the previous day's episode of whatever show you watch. I watch it every morning for the news and my girlfriend watches it for the celebrity gossip shows. So if you have cable, even basic cable, see if you have this little hidden gem.

Has anyone tried "Mind your language learn Japanese" for the DS?
