Genmobile design flaw - pictures needed

Post by Hobie-wan »

So I had gotten a non working Genmobile from Mjmjr that I was looking at to fix. I finally noticed what the problem is. They made a terrible design decision with the cartridge slot. Normally in most systems the slot is screwed down or at least has pegs from the case that pass through it to absorb the force of plugging and unplugging carts. The Genmobile not only relies on just the pins being soldered into the board to hold the connector still, there are tiny surface mount components right next to it.

So the slot got pushed too hard which cracked the plastic a bit, slid, and just sheared one or more resistors off the board. You can see the crack on this side of the slot mount above the USB connector and the resistor barely dangling in space there.

Can someone with a working Genmobile either take a picture or tell me if that little 102 resistor was connected to the spot above where it is now in relation to BATT, or to the spot above B? Also, was there another resistor connecting the other 2 pads and if it is another 102 or some other number? At the other end of the slot in the same position there are 2 more pads. Is there another resistor there that has been sheared off the one I have?

Anyone that has a Genmobile, be careful plugging carts in!

how much did this run you? why wouldn't the components that broke off be inside the casing?

It was given to me as "broken, have fun if you have luck fixing it". I need to know what position that particular resistor goes in and if there were some on the other spots too. I ended up knocking that one in the previous picture completely off. The cart slot flap wasn't exactly the tightest fitting things in the world and the resistors could have disappeared into Mike's carpet when it first broke or bounced out anywhere in shipping. Kind of easy for them to get lost.

Agree, it looks like it should go to the spot above, parallel with the intact resistor next to it. The way the resistor broke off, does not look like it could twist from the side. Note the white box painted on the PCB, maybe a resistor for each painted "frame" on the PCB? Looks like there is a resistor missing on the left.

Yeah, I saw the white screening and figured it probably was vertical. Need to know for sure though and if there were others next to it and on the other end of the connector plus their values.

Holy crap, that's incredibly flawed in its design. I'd say that people should avoid purchasing this altogether until a new revision comes out with a more secure cart slot.

A lot of unnecessary force must have been applied for the cart slot to have been damaged like that because this thing is incredibly sturdy. If there's another photo you need, just let me know.

Awesome, so there are supposed to be 2 vertical 102s there on the right. Can you check the same spot on the other side? I have markings for R48 next to those 2 capacitors, but the pads are empty and the plastic could have scraped that one off too.
