Dumbest things you've ever done? (video game related)

Post by BoneSnapDeez »

I'm sure we all have a few stories about stupid things we've done related to our consoles/games. Here's a few of mine:

1. When I started collecting retro games about a year and a half ago, I bought a Nintendo 64 (first one I've ever owned). I knew I would need a RAM expansion pak to run Majora's Mask and Donkey Kong 64, which I also bought. I peeked in the front slot, saw the jumper pak, and thought that was the RAM expansion (I figured brand new N64s came with an empty slot). So imagine my surprise when the games didn't work. I must have removed/cleaned/adjusted that jumper pak about ten times and then concluded my "expansion pak" was busted. Finally realized my error when I did some research online.

2. I own a PS3, but rarely play it. The other day I moved it to a television in a different room (went from HDMI to AV). Well, the console didn't produce a picture on the television. I panicked and thought I had the yellow light of death (I'm colorblind so I couldn't see the light wasn't yellow). I started looking up warranty information and methods of servicing a PS3. Then I stumbled upon an article telling me I had the reset the display (by holding the on button) when switching from HDMI to AV. Doh.

3. A couple of years ago, I decided to open and clean all my NES games. I didn't realize some games had five screws (those two extra ones at the top). I removed 3 screws from a 5 screw game and tugged on it until it opened. Bam! Shattered plastic and destroyed circuit board. Bye bye Contra.

I'm sure I'll think of more later.

1. When I was much younger, 13 or so, I found an Intellivision w/ a decent amount of boxed games for $10 at a garage sale just around the corner from my house. Took it home, and wasn't able to hook it up to my TV w/o buying an adapter from RadioShack first.

After hooking up the console, I fumbled through game after game... just looking for SOMETHING to entertain me properly. Nothing did, and I ended up trading everything to a local shop a few days later for only $10.

Even though my experience with the console was bone dry, I still wonder if I would've eventually developed appreciation for the system. At the very least, I could've definitely gotten more cash for what was inside that box.

2. A short while after the Wii came out, I hit my one and only "I've grown out of gaming - why would I put so much effort towards goals that aren't even real?" fad. Sold my original Wii for top-dollar, and the summer after, took my Gamecube/DS collections to a friend's garage sale and sold most of my titles for less than $5 a pop. Out of all my stupid purging decisions, this is the one that still haunts me, as I STILL haven't yet repurchased everything that I sold so cheaply that day.

Growing up my brother tried blowing into our NES while he was chewing gum. It was a couple of months before we got a new NES.

I played a "Pay to Win" online RPG for 2 years. I seriously tried my best to enjoy it and ignore the fact that I was actually harming video games by supporting it. I was doing pretty well for a while, but eventually I couldn't handle it anymore and quit. My love for video games and helping others is too strong for me to support bullshit like "Pay to Win".

I vowed to never do it again.

For those wondering, I spent an average of $40 a month on it. (>_<)

This might not be that related other than the fact i use pc's mostly for gaming.

I was trying to figure out the right jumper settings so that i could have two hard drives..and for some reason every combination i did never seemed to work and after countless fiddling with the jumpers i noticed a critical flaw.

I forgot to put the power cables in the hard drives :D

The way I got into buying old games again is through one of my stupid decisions.

I was looking for the game Ogre Tactics on PS1 because I used to rent and play it all the time as a kid. I did a bunch of research on the game itself and it's price range and FOOLISHLY bought a copy off of Amazon for $90.00 DISC ONLY. No original packaging or manuel. The disc itself works great and I've gotten plenty of enjoyment out of it, but after joining this site and seeing some lower prices for MUCH more than what I got for $90 really left a bad taste in my mouth.

I'm thinking of selling the disc and starting over for a complete copy.

Another stupid gaming related thing didn't happen to me but because of my two older brothers. Let's just say a heated debate over NHL Hockey on the Genesis led to a giant hole in our basements dry wall.

I spent about $100 for a "free t-shirt" by beating Gauntlet Legends in an arcade. It was over the course of several months and I had no idea that I had spent that much. Stupid game had to go and ruin the moment by telling me how many credits it took me to beat the game. :x
