DREAMCAST VGA QUESTIONS! come here for everything VGA w/ DC.
Re: DREAMCAST VGA QUESTIONS! come here for everything VGA w/ DC.
I use a VGA box that looks similar to this. It was the only third party one I could find locally that didn't have dot crawl Composite artifacts in the S-Video output. I'm not sure if this one is the same one or not. My box says Hais in the plastic on one side and has no other indicators.

I'm sure it's been discussed to death, but:
Also, when using a straight VGA connection (no composite) is there a way to output the audio to 1/8" headphone jack (PC speakers)?
^is that true? The reason I've not gotten a VGA box is I don't want the hassle of occupying both a VGA input and an composite input for those games not compatible. If all I have to do is unplug while booting then awesome. Most Dreamcast releases were VGA compatible.[3] A handful of European and North-American games however did not include the necessary flag within the boot sector on the disc ('IP.BIN') thus preventing the Dreamcast from booting in VGA mode. Unplugging the VGA box while booting a game, or boot discs like DC-X can be used as a workaround.

The workaround does not work with all games. Some games just cannot be booted in VGA...noiseredux wrote:I'm sure it's been discussed to death, but:

The workaround is not always true, some games simply do not support VGA in any way (iirc it was often Capcom games that didn't) but every VGA cable/box I've looked at has had a standard audio out jack that can be used for headphones/pc speakers. I can confirm the VGA cable Racket sells does because I have it. It's just VGA on one side DC connector on the other and an audio jack in the middle box.

I guess I won't get one then. My DC is hooked up to my monitor (not a TV). Currently I'm using component-->VGA box since the monitor doesn't have component-in. If I get a VGA box and it can't run some games, it's kind of pointless, cuz I'll have no other way to play them then.

You mean composite to VGA box, right?...noiseredux wrote:I guess I won't get one then. My DC is hooked up to my monitor (not a TV). And Noise, seriously, buy yourself a VGA box. The games that do support it -which is most of them anyway- will look far superior. Don't think about it, just buy one (and thank me later). If you don't, an alien hominid will come gnaw on your face before the next full moon...

But then there will be games I cant play
Re: DREAMCAST VGA QUESTIONS! come here for everything VGA w/ DC.
You can run the SVideo or Composite bypass if you buy the VGA boxnoiseredux wrote:But then there will be games I cant play
Just for the games that won't work in VGA. Attach the SVideo or Composite to your other VGA adaptor. SVideo is a better connection and direct VGA is the best. Your current Composite to VGA setup will not give you true 640 x 480 resolution, just a stepped up composite upscale. For both VGA boxes you can get a basic VGA switch box. Meanwhile the Nintendo SNES-N64-Gamecube VGA box you posted a while back has an auxiliary VGA input.
I just posted results of the Total Control in your other Thread.

no I can't. I'm using a VGA monitor. I don't want to dick around with a VGA input AND a composite to VGA input and then need a VGA switch box too.CRTGAMER wrote:You can run the SVideo or Composite bypass if you buy the VGA boxnoiseredux wrote:But then there will be games I cant play
