No other company ever released so much consistently amazing box art as Psygnosis. This is thanks to them hiring artist Roger Dean to take a break from making Yes and Mike Oldfield album covers to set his imagination to crafting some of the best fantasy artwork ever.
This takes me back. Especially the Shadow of the Beast cover. I thought it was so cool I ripped the advertisement out of my EGM and taped it inside my locker door in high school...right above my Mortal Monday ad.
I have considered collecting these just for the beautiful artwork. I still may someday.
As an interesting side note, a year or so ago I was trying to get Roger Dean (the artist on most of these) to do an interview on the subject for the podcast. Unfortunately, it didn't work out.
Hot damn, that is some beautiful box art. I've seen many times where US box art mangles the original Japanese compositions, but I'm not sure I've ever seen one game publisher crank out such quality. Thanks for elucidating me.
I run the 8/16-bit retro site TimeWarpGamer and if you want to follow the latest updates, check me out on Twitter.
That is really amazing box art. Though I find it funny that most of them are perfect examples of 80's game titles as well. I mean seriously, "Barbarian," "Obliterator," and the grand daddy "Awesome."
I feel old when talking to anyone my age yet too inexperienced to effectively talk to anyone older. Life is grand that way.
