Gamecube Games in 480P (Pictures)

Post by Captainvans »

To these day Gamecube games still look beautiful, just wanted to show you some pictures.

TV - 50 inch Samsung Plasma using Game Mode
Console - Nintendo Gamecube via Component Cable

Luigi's Mansion

Super Mario Sunshine

Super Smash Bros Melee

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess

Better results can still be done by using a device such as the DVDO Edge Green, such device takes the 480P feed and upscales it to 1080P.

If you have any questions feel free to ask :)

I wouldn't bother trying to upscale the 480p pictures as you can't get any more detail than what is already there. It can only interpolate. But then again if that device upscales better than your TV does, then it might be worth it. It's kind of like running an s-video cable from a LaserDisc player when the disc itself is pure composite. Won't do you any good unless the player has a better comb filter than the TV. GC games in 480p are awesome. I wish more of them supported 16:9 and I wish they could have better-than-stereo sound as well (Pro Logic II, etc is still derived from a stereo signal, I want true multichannel like the Xbox and a handful of PS2 games).

I have to hand it to you, though... at least you know to keep your 4:3 games in 4:3. Most people have the mentality of "THE SCREEN MUST BE 100% FILLED AT ALL TIMES OR THE WORLD WILL ENDZ!"

The DVDO Edge upscales better than any TV, also you could just output the natural 480P and let the DVDO do the processing instead of the TV, it does it in 6ms so you get a lagless feed.

I always keep original aspect ratios. You won't believe how many people get mad at me for playing Street Fighter 3 online because I play it in 480P without filters.

You should see how the Gamecube/Xbox look over 480p on a progressive CRT. Hell even my 480i WEGA looks amazing over component compared to an HDTV.

True 480p CRTs are pretty hard to come by. Most 1080i CRTs revert to 540p and overscan the edges to get 480p. It's true progressive scan (just like 240p on ant 480i CRT), but in the case of my crappy Sony 34XBR960 it is a little dimmer in 480p mode as a result of the overscan.

Great shots. The color is what jumps out at me. Nintendo discontinued the digital port on the GC because fewer than 1% of GC owners ever used it. And that was an early change, meaning actual component users were much less than 1% of the customer base. Good grief! In a way, this is one instance of Nintendo being ahead of its time.

How so? Both the PS2 and Xbox offered component video, multichannel digital sound and the ability to play some games in high definition (above 480p).

I am glad I have the Gamecube component cable. But was irked to discover that the audio is also delivered digitally to that port and could have been included on that same cable, but nooooo, Nintendo made you keep another set of cables hooked up to the system just for audio.

So is the component output of GameCube games on the Wii similar, same or better than the on a Game Cube?

Very nice screenshots BTW.
Thanks everyone...
