Sega Remote Arcade System wireless controller for Genesis

Post by RyaNtheSlayA »

I'll have to admit, I was a bit skeptical of buying this remote, even for the extremely high price of $10. As many of you know, there have been several early 90's attempts at wireless controllers and all have failed miserably, not for lack of trying, but rather because of the technology at the time. Every early wireless remote used IR technology, the same tech that is still used in most TV remotes to this day. While IR has it's benefits such as extremely long battery life and being fairly cheap, it has many negatives when implemented into a game controller, such as unreliable signals as well as a very short range and FOV.

So with the limits of the technology used in mind I present to you the Sega Remote Arcade System.

From the back of the box:

Gives freedom from controller cords!

Allows game play from up to 10 feet away

Special interference filter built into the receiver

Specially designed for extra comfort

[continues with average back of box marketing]

Now, there was a few more bullets on the back of the box but these are the important ones that I feel I should cover. Now obviously the first one is true, this is a completely wireless IR remote. What is a little less true however, is the claim of a 10 foot range. It's not that the range is terrible like earlier IR remotes (I recall Atari ones that had a range of 4 feet?), but it's definitely not 10ft either. I sit a good 9ft away from my TV screen and the signal would cut out every half second or so which was very annoying, it was especially noticeable playing Sonic 3, as it made it very hard to perform a spin dash. However, moving the chair a foot closer to around 8ft yielded smooth gameplay with no dropouts at all. Of course you still have to watch where you're pointing the controller but the experience was far better than most IR remotes I've tried. The FOV isn't too bad either, I was able to sit nearly anywhere on the couch with the remote pointed just slightly toward where the receiver was. I didn't notice any interference either which was nice.

I have mixed feelings on the aesthetics of the set. On the one hand, the controller is gorgeous with smooth lines, slightly rounded edges and glossy recessed button areas. It's quite a bit bigger than the 6 button but a tad smaller than the 3 button controller. On the other hand, the receiver is a fat disgusting thing but both feel well built.

As far as comfort is concerned this may well be the best Genesis controller for anybody with larger hands. The buttons are firm and have good travel, but aren't quite as small as the regular 6 button controller. The d-pad is the classic floating Sega design and feels great. The Start button is closer to the face buttons and makes for easy pressing. It's also a tad thicker than the original Genesis controller, so those with small hands may not find it as comfortable as I do.

After a few hours with this thing I've fallen in love with it. I've played some Ranger X, Rocket Knight Adventures, Sonic 3, and Comix Zone with it and was able to perform just fine. It may not be the best in some situations, but overall I'm extremely happy with it.

Edit: It also supports 2 controllers, so yes, you can pick up another controller and play with friends and both people can be wireless.

It doesn't really take a conscious effort to use it, but you just have to make sure where you're sitting it gets a fairly direct line of sight. It has a suprisingly good horizontal range, but the vertical range is less impressive for sure.

It's less of a concern in slower games especially, where the connection dropping for a few fractions of a second doesn't matter. The only time I ever felt the controller was hampering my game performance was in Street Fighter II and Sonic.

The dpad also seems to be a little looser compared to say the Saturn controller. On the one hand it makes round movements even more smooth. On the other hand it can be a little too easy to hit those diagonals. I don't have a problem with it but my friend found it fairly obnoxious.

If I see another one for cheap I'll let you know. Not many people really browse the game review section in the first place so I'm not really surprised.

I couldn't imagine that being possible without massive changes to the controller and genesis. The controller isn't designed to output RF signals and the genesis isn't designed to accept them.

Yeah I was hoping to use parts from the wavebird dongle and controller and place them inside the Genesis Controller/Dongle.

Will that RF extender really work? I'm willing to try it but it seems like all I could do is chang the receiver with that and not the controller.

Great Review
The Sega pad has a great button layout, nice to read about a wireless version. I have seen aftermarket pads for the PC and other systems that use the Sega six button layout. How long do the batteries last and what kind? Your mention of support for a second wireless pad got me thinking of the slide switch. Is that for selecting channels and player ports? Could come in handy for any two player turn based games.

It takes AAAs. I haven't managed to run them out but I haven't had my Genesis for a while. Before hand I'd say I had at least 10 hours on them.

The slide switch is for selecting player ports.
