Super Game Boy love!

Post by sbk »

So I recently broke out the Super Game Boy because I picked up some Game Boy games and I remember loving the Super Game Boy as a kid. My favorite games to play as a kid was Super Mario Land 2 and Pokemon Red. I've never been into Game Boy games but I think I will have to pick some up now. What were your favorite games to play on the Super Game Boy?
(aka I am using your nostalgia and knowledge as a recommendation list :D )

I've always been partial to the Game Boy Color over the Super Game Boy. I don't like its color schemes, or the fact that it can't play the color on the black GBC carts.

Well, the Gamecube Game Boy player can do all the clear Game Boy Color games and Advance games if you want to look at any of those, whereas the Super Game Boy can't. Of course, I have one and I still like to use my Super Game Boy to play some of the classics. There's so many good Game Boy games it's hard to recommend some without really knowing someone's taste, but here are some of my personal favs:

Donkey Kong (Awesome re-imagining of the arcade classic)

Donkey Kong Land (Worth checking out if you like the SNES games)

Dr. Mario (Great pick-up-and-play puzzle game)

Final Fantasy Adventure (Very fun and pretty massive action rpg)

Final Fantasy Legend III (Best of the traditional turn-based FF GB games)

Kid Dracula (Konami's little Castlevania-esque cartoony game is fun as hell)

Kirby's Dream Land (Just plain fun)

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers (Actually a pretty fun beat-em-up)

Mole Mania (Fantastic adventure/puzzle game - one of the best I've played)

Pokemon Blue (If you like red, you might also want blue to catch-em-all)

Super Mario Land (A exclusive and very fun Mario game for the Game Boy)

Super Mario Land 2: Six Golden Coins (Fantastic game & very unique)

Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3 (Very different from the previous, but great)

The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening (One of my favorite games across any system)

Yes, I love the Super Game Boy. I even have a compact (2nd model) SNES devoted to it.
I always loved creating the perfect 4-color scheme and alternating between that and one of the many preset ones on the fly (based on the whims of the moment).

Let's see, my favorites to play on the SGB are:

Metroid II
Donkey Kong Land
(1-3)
Final Fantasy Adventure
The Pokemon
's (red/blue or yellow, the SGB give the better color option(s) than the Game Boy Color)
The Castlevania games (II is the best, but it breathes new life into the 1st one as well)
Mega Man (the 1st is my favorite for nostalgic reasons, but 3-5 are great too; 2 is decent enough, but is too easy and has horrible music IMO)
Kirby's Dreamland
Pokemon: Trading Card Game

Kirby's Pinball Land
and/or
Pokemon Pinball
Mario's Picross
any fighting game (Street Fighter, Samurai Shodown, KOF '95, World Heroes Jet, Toshinden)

and sometimes the Dragon Warrior Monsters games.

I'll have to give Mario Land 2 another play through. I don't think I've ever had that in my SGB.

Oh yeah, and Zelda:LA is kind of a given. The SGB gives a good reason to own the grey cart over the DX version (If I want a Purple Link, I shall make him purple).
...just another lost soul...

I have Castlevania Adventure, and it's ok, but you move incredibly slow and some people really dislike the game for that. Apparently the other Castlevania games are quite good though, and of course Kid Dracula is awesome.

5 is not only one of the best Gameboy Mega Man games, it's one of the best classic Mega Man games period.

Also I second Donkey Kong and Metroid II.

Castlevania Adventure 2 is probably the best on the Gameboy. I really don't care for the others.

Links Awakening is my favorite Zelda game out of all Zelda games.
