Console Confusion
Console Confusion
Hello, I'm new to Racketboy and I guess this is my first official post. Anyways, I have been saving up to buy another retro console to add to my collection, but I haven't exactly been able to choose. I am stuck between buying: A Neo-Geo Pocket Color, Genesis, or a Ps1. Please let me know which you think is the right one to buy.
Re: Console Confusion
Welcome to the forum. Two things:
1. There is no possible way to answer this without knowing what kind of games you like. Personally, I'd get a Genesis over a PS1, and a PS1 over a NGPC, but that's just me. I know I like more Genesis games, although the PS1 is a strong contender. Do you like shmups, platformers, beat-em-ups, and 2D? Go for a Genesis. Do you like huge FMV RPGs and 3D platformers? Go for a PS1. Others can be more informative on the NGPC. If you give us a bit more information, we could weigh in opinions a little better.
2. Just a heads-up for future reference, this is the Together Retro sub-forum, which is for a feature we do where once a month we play a retro game together. Your question and questions like it typically belong in the General Gaming forum.
Cheers and hope this helps some!

I like to emphasize things. Nah, just kidding, but why is the whole post bold?
Anyways, I love all three of those systems, but like o.pwuaioc said, we're going to need to know what kind of games you're looking to play or what you want out of your next system before we can do much to help you out.

Re: Console Confusion
Well, if you own a PS2 than you could potentially have a PS1, and a lot of genesis games by way of the genesis collection. With a 360 there is a collection as well.
However if you must a have a console, I am really stuck between PS1 and Genesis. Additionally, PS1s are VERY cheap and you really wouldn't have to save up much. Genesis games are also fairly cheap.
I think You'll want to pick both of them up eventually if you don't have access to a Wii, 360 or PS3 for emulation releases.

Also, is price a factor? The PS1 is cheaper than the Genesis, so that may be a factor, although good Genesis games are on the whole are cheaper than good PS1 games.
Re: Console Confusion
I recommend a PC Engine Duo or a Japanese Saturn.
If you do go with the Genesis or the 3DO, then you definitely need this game:

On the 3DO, you can get The Director's Cut Ballz (ouch!)

Re: Console Confusion
A Neo Geo pocket is a very good handheld to invest and collect for overall, especially if you're a financially minded person. Sure the unit will cost somewhere around 40 bucks but the game catalog (US titles) only cost about no more that 1/4 the price of the console and are frequesntly found on ebay. Very little amount of filler titles due to it's humble amount of games. If these select games appeal to u then give it some thought:
KOF R series
SamSho! Series
Card Fighter clash
Gals Fighter
Bust a Move Pocket
Magical Drop
Sonic pocket Adv.
Pacman
SNK-Capcom
A megadrive is a pretty good choice too. Oh! And Welcome

This.
But with my own personal tastes, I'd suggest the PSX over the Genesis. I'm currently fixated on the console myself, and despite owning a good amount more Genesis titles - my PSX receives much more playtime, and I feel has the stronger library overall.
I haven't had the luxury of playing an NGPC yet, so I can't comment on that.

Re: Console Confusion
Well man, those are three drastically different consoles you listed.
Although it's the weakest of the three, I would actually recommend the NeoGeo Pocket Color. You can still find brand new models for well under 100 bucks (just check on Amazon). I'd try to scoop one up before they become more scarce.
