sony pvm power question (stupid question)

Post by shateredsoul »

When I press the power button on a Sony pvm, what is suppose to happen? Does it need something connected before powering on? Just received one through ebay, poorly packaged, and had some flaws not described (including a crack on the back).

I press power, nothing, I connected a system to line A, press power on the system, power on the monitor, nothing.

Don't tell me I just carried a broken 50 pound monitor up a flight of stair on my own for nothing! :(

Hopefully I'm just missing something here.

When you power it on (if the switch is in the "off" position before you plug it in), the "STANDBY" indicator will flash quickly and you'll see "LINE A" lit up on the side. The rest of the buttons will be hidden until you hit the CONTROL button in the upper right corner. It'll also flash white/make the usual degauss noise when you turn it on, so if that's not happening then there's definitely a problem.

It is completely black (if there's no video signal) when you turn it on, however, so you might want to try hooking up something to LINE A just to double check if there's any kind of picture. But from your comments in this and the other thread it sounds like your seller just packed it poorly/generally lied about its condition as you're probably already aware. :( I'm sorry that happened to you, hope it's not too much of a pain to get your rightful refund.

Yeah man, very unfortunate. The guy was really worried about getting a negative feedback and gave me a full refund. I guess that was my workout for the day, lol. I've been procrastinating taking it out. I contacted some tv repair guys, they said it would probably cost more than 150...

I decied to just use this scart to component adapter and call it a day,

http://www.ebay.com/itm/220698773448?ss ... 480wt_1185

and this 4 way scart switch cable that allows me to get audio out of it

http://www.ebay.com/itm/380366698882?ss ... 4052wt_905

So I'll be using scart for genesis, snes, and I'm not sure whether it's worth using for nes, I read that NES doesn't output rgb. So it's no biggie.

Sucks that you couldn't try it out, but you can always run into a PVM in the future (or get that smaller one for free!) so like you said it's no biggie. Especially after that full refund, glad it worked out that way!

Curious about something
Can you pull the back cover off and look for a chip or two?

The Sony WEGA series have marginal chips in the power supply, perhaps your PVM has the same issue. If it does, the chips are under twenty bucks.

MCZ3001D or MCZ3001DB chips on the power supply PCB.

BE CAREFUL HIGH VOLTAGE AROUND THE CRT EVEN WHEN UNPLUGGED!

Uhm, well since he gave me a full refund I might not mess with that. I don't want to get electrocuted =/

He has another one, I asked my sister if her boyfriend could do me a favor and go test it and pick it up, but he can't. She volunteered to do it but it's way to heavy for her and I don't want her meeting a random stranger.

Perfectly safe to pull the cover
Really no worries of getting shocked as long as you know not what to touch. The voltage will be at the flyback transformer. Just don't touch the back of the tube around the exposed coil at the center or the thick wire going to the tube.

Really curious about the chips, I'm trying to see what Sony series have them. If you do pop the cover off, can you post a pic? I'll add the information to the Sony Twenty Dollar Repair Guide.

ok, but it may be a while. Pretty busy, any special tools I may need to pop the cover?

Take a look, should be just a phillips screwdriver. Maybe post a pic of the back? I just updated the Repair Guide with a list on Sony TVs, I'll add yours if it has the chips.

hey, sorry but I couldn't open it.. seems liked i'd have to take more than I expected off to take the back off (or maybe I just didn't have the patience to take it off). It's gone now. RIP PVM. I posted it for free for a while, but had no takers.
