Is the DSi XL region free?

Post by BoringSupreez »

And can the language be switched to English if it comes from Japan? I ask this because Japan was the only place that got the white DSi XL (which I want), and I don't know Japanese well enough to buy my DS games in that language. Plus, I already own a lot of American DS games.

For DS games, yes it's region free. For DSiware, it's region locked.

I don't know about changing the language option of a Japanese DSi XL.

I can live without DSiware, and I suppose that as long as I know how to boot the games, it doesn't matter if the system language is Japanese, right? The games would still be English.

There is no option for changing the language. The built in games (brain training type stuff) will be in Japanese as well. Basic math exercises aside, they are very difficult to understand unless you are a master of kanji.

Your DSi will say LL on it, instead of XL, so your friends are sure to be jealous.

There are some games that are region locked on the DSi/DSiXL, though the only ones of note are Pokemon Black/White.
Gaming accomplishments:
Nibbler (marathon): 251,169,160 / Nibbler (one life): 5,263,360 (WR)
Donkey Kong: 423,100 [L12-1] (150th place as of 2019-01-15)
Super Smash Bros. (N64): Ranked top 5 in Wisconsin from Q1 2016 to Q2 2017
Shrek SuperSlam: won largest tournament in game's history (Shrekfest 2018)

So this applies to DSi enhanced games, some of which might have this restriction. It's interesting that it seems the 3DS does not have this issue according to this thread
