You and me both. And it's funny how so many gamers peg you as not being a "hardcore gamer" because you don't like JRPGs. I own over 300 games and around 20 consoles, but I'm still not hardcore enough because I don't like menu-based fighting, random battles, and guys with spikey blue or red hair.StuntDouble wrote: Dragon Warrior taught me that RPG's just aren't my thing. I rented it for the weekend one time, and within an hour of trying to play it, I was ready to go back and switch it for another game. I don't have the patience or the attention span for a long drawn out turn based game.

Not to point fingers at you guys but I still think there's probably a good chunk of other JRPG's to maybe try out and see if you like them. Even the old Final Fantasy's pale in comparison to the amount of grinding in the Dragon Quest games, or so I hear (haven't played them myself yet, but everyone says that's how they are). Maybe you guys have tested the waters beyond DQ, but yeah I just wouldn't write off a genre if that's all you've played.

There are few oddities out there I really enjoyed. I loved The Legend of Legaia on PS1. The fighting system was a blast to tinker around with.Xeogred wrote:Not to point fingers at you guys but I still think there's probably a good chunk of other JRPG's to maybe try out and see if you like them. Parasite Eve was really good, too. The storyline was FAR form the cliche stuff most JRPGs rely on. Between that, the awesome movie cutscenes, and seeing what strange creature would attack me next, that game kept me going for a while.
I also played through Final Fantasy III (VI) and Breath of Fire 1 & 2 both for SNES and they had some pretty good storyline. But still, the grinding and random battles throughout those games guarantee that I probably will never play through them again.
I can say that I didn't like Final Fantasy VII like at all, though. Admittedly, it had VERY impressive cutscenes. But that was all I liked about it, really. And that's like THE JRPG for a lot of fans of the genre.

Almost any JRPG (maybe even RPG's in general):
Start -> leave town -> grind -> next town -> grind -> dungeon -> grind -> boss -> next town -> repeat.

Xeogred, I've tried other rpg's, but they've been games like Secret of Mana and Chrono Trigger. I found I enjoyed both of them, but then I don't think either one requires much if any grinding, and if I remember correctly, they didn't have random encounters.
Opa Opa,
And that's why my patience wears thin with those types of games. I understand people are willing to put that kind of time and effort into that sort of game, but I'm not so I tend to avoid them.

Honestly, I hate the formula, myself.StuntDouble wrote:And that's why my patience wears thin with those types of games. I understand people are willing to put that kind of time and effort into that sort of game, but I'm not so I tend to avoid them.
I'll put up with it though if the game has great music, atmosphere, story... The things that draw you into the game and make you want to progress onward.
I really don't know how people can live and breathe rpg's. I certainly don't have that much patience.
Re: Classic Games That You Didn't Like?
I just wish we could draw a line between "random battles" and "grinding". There is a big difference in my book, and there's barely any JRPG's out there that I've played (and that's a lot of them) where I REALLY needed to "grind" to get past something, AKA spend hours running around some level to level up my characters. Most JRPG's are so easy (seriously can't stress this enough) that you don't even need to do this, probably unless it's Dragon Quest or the NES Final Fantasy's and a few other old exceptions.
So as always, I think people really exaggerate that aspect.

Re: Classic Games That You Didn't Like?
JRPG is my favorite genre, but the early games are pretty weak. Dragon Warrior is boring, Dragon Warrior II is just terrible, Final Fantasy can be a pain in the ass, Phantasy Star is difficult as balls. While these games are certainly influential examples of the genre, they are far from being the best the genre has to offer. I think the JRPG peaked in the SNES area, and the best games of that time (Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy VI, Earthbound, Secret of Mana) actually require very little grinding.
Some of the more obscure ones, like The 7th Saga, are a different story altogether...

This is true of nearly every genre, really. Except FPS games, the early ones are still fun.BoneSnapDeez wrote:JRPG is my favorite genre, but the early games are pretty weak. That's what I love about those SNES RPGs. If you just kill everything you come across the first time, you don't have to actively grind to be leveled up high enough.BoneSnapDeez wrote:I think the JRPG peaked in the SNES area, and the best games of that time (Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy VI, Earthbound, Secret of Mana) actually require very little grinding.
