Hideo Kojima talks life, influences at USC presentation

Post by Xeogred »

Thought this was a really cool article some of you guys would probably dig as well, pretty insightful and interesting stuff here:
http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/06/hideo ... sentation/
Kojima was very honest about his work/life balance -- he gave his schedule during the week as sleeping for only four hours a night, and working or in meetings the rest of the day. He said that even he regrets being away from his family so much, but that he tries to keep weekends free just to spend with them. He also told the story of his son coming into the office with him while designing Metal Gear Solid, when the designers sometimes used Lego pieces to put the levels together. His son returned to his wife, who was already unhappy with the amount of time Kojima was spending away, only to report that his Dad "plays with Legos all day."
Damn.

Can't really win, if he had spent more time with his family, I'm sure he'd be depressed about not having enough time to dedicate towards his dream. Not having an artistic outlet with a wealth of ideas is torture for creative minds.
If you like retro games, come hang out on my stream!

I admire his work ethic for how young he is.
I like the part of the artical where his son told his wife that daddy plays with legos all day lol.

Yeah, I mean on one hand that sounds like brutal work ethnic, but on the other... the guy clearly loves what he's doing, so it really is win/win/lose/lose or ... wait what? lol.

One part of me wants to say that's also probably just Japan on the crazy work hours, but then of course we've heard the horror stories about EA and other big developers over the years, so I'm sure it's everywhere. Living in the office. Well I love to play games, but yeah after two years of game design in high school I think I realized I didn't want my hobby to be a chore, heh. So I commend these kind of guys that enjoy making games and putting that crazy amount of work and patience into this stuff.
