Jan: Adventure - Golden Axe Warrior sounds like a good idea to me

Feb: Fighter - maybe something that's not Capcom or SNK? I thought we had discussed Clayfighter before...

Mar: something Western for a change would be nice :) Maybe a Baldur's Gate game? Some of those saw several ports...

Apr: Sports or Racing - the Riiiiiiidge Racer series has appeared all over the place, often as a launch game, which makes it interesting to me.

May: FPS - Wolfenstein 3D's 20th anniversary, and the game we should play. Widely ported, with a likely interview for the podcast...

Jun: Strategy - probably won't play unless someone comes up with something cool, so surprise me!

Jul: Runngun or beatemup - Gunstar Heroes has now been widely ported and would be a great choice. Can't believe we haven't done it yet...

Aug: Party game - no strong feelings on this one, though Zelda Four Swords is now a freebie for DS owners (and 3DS), so that might be a good choice.

Sep: Platformer - no strong feelings, though I'll probably try whatever. I do quite like the Out of this World suggestion

Oct: Horror-related - Silent Hill would be a great choice, as would Alone in the Dark. Both have seen some ports now...

Nov: Puzzle - no strong feelings - Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo would be fun, though.

Dec: Shmup - I'm against Fantasy Zone as I'd like to see us play a more recent shmup that's a vert (since we've done mostly horis and older shmups). Something like Ikaruga (has at least three ports) or DoDonPachi (at least three ports) would be good, since some of these are now cheap(er) downloads on current consoles.

Those are my initial thoughts...

I'm against Ikaruga because I just traded my copy.

DoDonPachi sounds interesting. :)

Some suggestions:

February: In celebration of MK 9 being released, why not MKII or MKIII?

September: Sparkster: I'm surprised we haven't done this already, actually. It will also be interesting to see the differences between the SNES and Genesis versions.

October: 7th Guest? Just an easy game for a nostalgia trip, perhaps also coupled with 11th Hour?

November: Tetris (what? really? yeah! if Galaga, why not Tetris?)

noiseredux wrote:As this year dwindles down, it's time to start discussing next year's Together Retro calendar. The little TR team has tried to assemble a rough outline to help start us off. We're thinking something like this:

Jan: Adventure
Feb: Fighter
Mar: RPG
Apr: Sports or Racing
May: FPS
Jun: Strategy
Jul: Runngun or beatemup
Aug: Party game
Sep: Platformer
Oct: Horror-related
Nov: Puzzle
Dec: Shmup
Do we get to discuss genres too? Or recommend games outside of those genres?

Anyway, I also want to nominate Golden Axe Warrior, I tried to get it on the list for this year but was shot down :p. Another good option I think would be Beyond Oasis/The Story of Thor.

I also wanted to nominate the Puzzle League series of games for the Puzzle month. It seemed like a pretty popular idea in the Zoop thread.

Finally, I think we should have a Pinball month. It's a genre we've not done before (afaik) and from the pinball games discussion, it seems pretty popular. Plus, score based Together Retros always seem popular. I'm not totally sure which games to choose, but I'd be leaning towards the Crush series on TG16 and VC.

Other ideas I had:

Racing - Wipeout seems like a good option as something arcadey and fun thats on several formats.

Fighting - Tekken, Soul Blade, Dead or Alive or even Bloody Roar all appeal to me, I just want to have a 3D fighter this year for something different.

RPG - This one proved really tricky last year. Please try and choose something available in Europe or at least on a region free console! The issue is that Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy are too obvious and most other stuff is only on one console :(.

FPS - No suggestions here. I'd rather play Pinball :p

Strategy - Command and Conquer - it's been ported all over the shop, and it's an RTS instead of turn based which will differentiate it from Shining Force's turn based gameplay.

Run n Gun or Beat-em-up - Whilst I really want to play a beat-em-up because we didn't this year, I also would like to play Shock Troopers as a run'n'gun option. It's available on Neo Geo, and on the SNK Classics Collection disc, so it's pretty decently available.

Party game - Perhaps this could be replaced by pinball. I can't really think of many party games from back in the day that were widespread.

Platformer - Oh god, so many options. I'm not too fussed here.

Horror - I got nothing

Shmup - We did Gradius, let's do R-Type. If not, how about Fantasy Zone for something a bit different?

I was thinking one of the Guilty Gears which is on PS1, DC, GBA, PS2, etc.

Platformer: Giana Sisters
released on all kinds of systems, usually as homebrew ports. Could be an interesting choice, as it was sort of a straight up response to SMB to the extent that Nintendo even got it taken off shelves (the C64 version I believe).

I like that idea, but I also like the 3D fighter idea above.

I also strongly support a pinball title!

There was some talk about doing the original Half-Life. When the subject came up, a remarkable number of people hadn't played it. It's on enough consoles now that it should fit the cross platform requirement.

Just thinking out loud (with my fingers).

May: FPS- Doom

Oct: Horror-related- I like the Silent Hill idea. Silent Hill 2 & 3 are fixing to get a re-release and should be easy to come by and SH 1 is on PSN.

I really do want to play a 3D fighter if we can!

EDIT: Dead or Alive 2 is on PS2 and Dreamcast, DOA1 is on PS1 and Saturn (import only though)

Another idea I had for party games - Parappa the Rapper and /or Um Jammer Lammy. iirc, Parappa is on PS1 and PSP (and maybe PSN?) and Um jammer lammy is on PS1 and PSN. Parappa also had a PS2 sequel.

I like the idea of sparkster that someone mentioned earlier too.
