Re: Classic Games That You Didn't Like?
Most Every Sonic Game - The level designs just feel awkward to me. You're inclined to go fast, but should actually take it slow if you want to find the secret rings, gems, whatever. I can never really find a happy medium. Hit detection feels off too. Every time I play a Sonic game it just reminds me how I'd rather be playing Mario World on the SNES.
Final Fantasy VII - Not a bad game per se, but overrated to the point of absurdity. Horrible graphics, incoherent story, awkward magic/skill system. Seeing this top nearly every "best RPGs of all time" list has always baffled me, as it's far from being the best Final Fantasy game and isn't even the best RPG on the Playstation.
Phantasy Star I, II, and III - I respect these games for breaking the away from the typical swords and sorcery storyline and l love the character portraits and colorful graphics. But my God, are these a chore to play. Too much grinding, bull-bustingly difficult dungeons, and not enough of a developed story to make you want to continue playing.

Final Fantasy I - I can't understand why this game has a strong following. I played through with a balanced party only to find that the thief has no redeeming qualities and the magic system was way too awkward; felt I would be better served by having "Fighter, Fighter, Fighter, Red Mage." I found the story to be absolutely dull, only spiced up with a weird random element appearing from nowhere towards the end (the "time loop"). I remember spending a lot of time in a dungeon, working my way out only to come to a group of enemies that turns my entire party to stone before I have a chance to do anything. BLEH.
The 8-bit FF games are some of my least favorite RPGs. The music was good though.

Bad Dudes (NES) - Aside from the classic intro/ending, I've never seen quite exactly what people love so much about this game. It could be because I've never touched the arcade original, but the gameplay has never seemed all that special to me, especially when compared to other beat-em-up gems on the console - like River City Ransom, TMNT II, or any of the Double Dragon games. Maybe I'm just not a bad enough dude.
I've always kinda felt this way about the Sonic games too. Don't get me wrong, I like 'em, and they can certainly be a great deal of fun, but it's difficult to shake the feeling that I'm just 'not playing them right'.

Goddamn, that game sucks. It's a jumbled, confusing fetch quest with clunky-ass controls.
Damn, I had no idea so many people hated this game.
I absolutely love it. The first game I ever played where 2 friends could be so far away from each other.
Plus, it had a random world generator, so its new each time.
You guys just don't have the funk

Streets of Rage series, Mario Kart, and... erm.
There's a few more, but those 2 are the ones I think of off the top of my head. It's not that they're bad games, they just fail to hold my attention.

Subterranean on Genesis. I bought this game based on how badass the box art looked and when I popped it in I was treated to possibly one of the most boring and annoying games ever.
I just hate the physics of trying to control your ship. Most of the time you're just avoiding obstacles to collect stranded people - there's hardly any kind of shooting (as far as I remember) and your ship just looks ugly.
I remember trying to go back to it and quickly lost interest.

I disagree on Sonic. I absolutely love the Sonic games (16-bit) and generally prefer playing them to SMB3 or SMW. I generally do not feel the need to race though things, unless the level calls for it (which does happen). I enjoy poking around the stages and finding everything. Perhaps that's why I love Sonic CD so much.
I agree about FFVII. I enjoy it well enough, but it is absolutely overrated. The story is idiotic at times, definitely. The optional quests such as the gold chocobo and the "weapon" enemies near the end are absolutely absurd. I find those things boring and wastes of time; not fun like games should be. I would rather clean dirty dishes.
Also, for the most part, agree on PSI, II and III. A bit less so on PSI and II, as I do enjoy the stories, but the large amount of grinding does take a lot of the fun out of it. PSIV fixed just about every issue, fortunately.

Frankly, the intro/ending IS what everyone loves about this game I think. I had it on my NES as a kid, I had fun and played it a lot, but I never thought it was something I'd consider a great title. It really isn't anything special.
Also I think the over-hype of Final Fantasy VII has pretty much cancelled itself out at this point.

You know, I've seen some of your older posts about game difficulty and how you've beaten some tough games and I figured, wow, this guy must be adept if he's finished X and X - much better than I. Well, now I don't feel so bad, because I finished Jurassic Park as a young kid with no cheats at my disposal. Eat that!![]()
Both of the SNES Jurassic Parks are tight, the second is a great game for co-op play.
yeah for real! I beat that game easily back around 7th grade when I got it, lol. I thought it was a lot of fun too!
