Smart A.I.
In a world where A.I. is known for walking into walls, walking in circles, or to not walk at all but stand there to stare while you walk right past them, what are some games that actually have smart AI? Do any such games exist out there?

I don't if it's just because I haven't played much Next Gen stuff - but just from playing Resistence and Kill Zone - I've noticed great improvements in enemy AI since the days of the PS1 and PS2 where Nazi's would sit in the middle of fields or hide behind rocks with their heads sticking out.
The enemies in Kill Zone and Resistence actually try to out maneuver you somewhat and know how to aim.
It also may be because I'm pretty crappy when it comes to FPS' (don't play nearly as much as I used to save for Metroid Prime).

I've always loved Half-Life 2's AI. Aside from one case where you can hide behind a jar of mayo, the AI uses flanking, leading, squad tactics, and grenades to good effect. One memorable instance is when storming the prison to save Dr. Vance, I was in a duct, and a guard heard me. Instead of crawling down, he chucked a grenade in the duct, and my heart stopped for a second as I hit S as fast as I could to back up before getting blown to pieces.christopher85 wrote:In a world where A.I. is known for walking into walls, walking in circles, or to not walk at all but stand there to stare while you walk right past them, what are some games that actually have smart AI? I would say the AI in the first FEAR game was pretty damn good.
Also as great as the AI is in Half-Life 2, the Combine aren't nearly as scary as the Marines. haha

how about Metal Gear series for having decent AI and Goldeneye 64 as being the worst.

WiiU- jacktsang05

Technically I don't even think Goldeneye and most games back then had AI, it was just triggers and such. Haha... it was a blessing how stupid the enemies were sometimes on the harder difficulties, was always fun when they got stuck shooting at doors or something.AznKhmerBoi wrote:how about Metal Gear series for having decent AI and Goldeneye 64 as being the worst.

Agreed. Also Metro 2033's human enemy AI did provide some entertaining encounters, even if they were quite few.Xeogred wrote:I would say the AI in the first FEAR game was pretty damn good.

Off the top of my head.
Halo (regardless of how you feel about the game, it does have pretty good AI)
Half Life (2)
Company of Heroes
FEAR
If you want something retro with surprisingly good AI, try Jurassic Park on the Genesis. That's one of the things the team worked hard on for the game (IIRC, it was on a Sega-16 article or interview)

They both have horrible AI IMO.AznKhmerBoi wrote:how about Metal Gear series for having decent AI and Goldeneye 64 as being the worst.
Already mentioned, but Half Life, Half Life 2 and Halo all have great AI. Typically, it seems FPS games have the most impressive examples of intelligent AI, don't know why.

Serious Sam
Not Smart but Robotron aggression all homing in on you.
I was impressed with Wii Conduit, some Aliens would run around the corner when getting hit by your fire. I suspect Conduit 2 is even better.
