DC Coders Cable SD Mod Help?

Post by RazorX »

hi guys im the biggest fan of the dreamcast ive had mine since i was a kid and ive just recently found out about the dreamcast sd adapter, ive been waiting for something like this for years and what i would like help with is to mod my unused coders cable to make it a serial to sd adapter ive read it can be done but what i would love is a very simple guide or pic that will show me what to do i was thinking of cutting off the serial connection and soldering the wires to the sd card will that work and what wires do i use, each wire has a different colour so hopefully its not hard..

also my dreamcast isnt working at the minute because the socket the dreamcast fan plugs into has come off and i tryed to solder it back on but the solder just came off and wouldnt sick back on and the dreamcast just goes to a black screen after seconds without it any help getting it up and running would be a god send thank you..

You can buy them ready made for under 20 euro on eBay...

You can solder the wires directly on the underside of the controller port board. You'll see the 3 pins there that attach to the white connection piece. Cut off the connection piece on the fan part, strip the end of the wires (carefully) and solder them directly to the 3 pins on the controller port board...

Then it's about time you start looking into it my friend. If you wanna mod, you gotta learn to read schematics. Print out the link I gave you and take it with you to your local electronics shop and show it to them. They will give you the right parts for this mod, and I'm sure they can help you with the schematics. This looks like a fairly simple mod, so with a little common sense even you should be able to understand once you have the right parts...

But first try to get that DC up and running again...

The only thing you need from the original coders cable is the serial port connection. So you have to desolder the wires that enter the printboard. You don't need the printboard. You will have to make your own printboard for this mod. That's what the schematics are for...

You need...

- LED
- 470 Ohm resistor
- 47 uF capacitor
- 0.1 uF capacitor (ceramic)
- printboard with straight lines
- wire
- solder
- Dreamcast serial connection
- SD card reader

But seriously, you're not listening. Make a print of the link I gave you and show it to your local electronic parts shop...
