Best way to play old RPGs

I have always wanted to play through Dragon Warrior 1-3 and Phantasy Star 1-3, I got about done with all of these (gameboy color/advance versions) and have never beat them. Should I play Dw 1-3 on SFC (translated) and PS 1-3 on GBA?

You kind of answered your own question there, lol. I haven't played any of these games, but I hear the GBC route is a good way to go for the old Dragon Quest games. Check out this review from HVGN if you haven't, he does a 30 minute comparison on the first game vs the NES version:


I looked up some videos of the SNES remakes and honestly thought the music was kind of bad compared to the originals (I'd blame the arrangers), but that's me. Again, haven't really played them myself so what do I know, lol.

I recently played through Dragon Warrior 1-3. Let me tell you ahead of time that 1 and 2 have not aged well at all. I advise playing 3 if you are to play any of them, the other two are insufferably slow. I played through the GBC version, but I suppose emulating the SNES remake would be the best route - game looks great.

I played through DW 1-3 on GBC with a Gameboy Player for Game Cube. But like Lodestar says, DW1-2 are really rough, slow-paced experiences (though not without positive elements). DW3 is my favorite 8-bit RPG though and I had a lot of fun with it. I believe that the GBC versions are based on the SFC versions, so I assume the differences between them are largely graphical.

I don't think there's a serious difference between any way you play Phantasy Star. But I would recommend you try to get ahold of PS4 too, since it's often considered the best of the series. So you could either get it for Genesis or if you have a PS3/360, get Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection, which has all of them.

I liked the pacing of 1. Dragon Warrior 2 is slooooooooooooooooooooow. Mostly because you now have a party to manage.

I haven't started 3 yet.

The great thing about all of those games is that they don't really depend on reflex or special button inputs to play - you're just selecting from a menu, afterall.

So the real question to ask yourself is which chair in your house is the most comfortable? If it's in front of the TV, most of those games are available on Virtual console or can be played through a GB player.

If it's your computer chair, you can emulate any of those games without breaking a sweat.

This all may simply come down to a matter of personal preference, but in my experience it is best to play old RPGs while sitting in a golden throne with two tanned and well oiled swimsuit models fanning me with giant palm fronds and feeding me grapes while my harem girls cosplay the major characters and role play my turn-based battle decisions in a pudding wrestling arena as my game is projected on the overhead jumbotron and the London Symphony Orchestra performs the music live with Larvelle Jones from the Police Academy movies doing the sound effects. I know it's not for everyone, but it's what I like to do. That's just my opinion on what is the best way to play old RPGS. Take it for what it's worth.

I personally prefer the Boston Pops to the London Symphony Orchestra.

On a serious note, the end castle of DQ2 is a boss rush. On the original NES version the bosses will stay dead until you save, so you can go through, kill the first one, die, respawn at the nearby church, heal your party, get the second boss, repeat. I had heard the bosses wouldn't respawn but I kept saving, so eventually I was power leveled high enough to defeat all the bosses in a row. I'm not sure how things work on the GBC version.
