The Wii was the first console that was not just for us (the hardcore gamers). For that it was both hated and a huge success. There are certainly games on the Wii that cater to a hardcore crowd, but we're used to having everyone in the industry cater to us all the time, so it was like "wait, what? Casual gamers. Eff that!". It ruffled a few feathers among traditional gamers, but a lot of people have calmed down now that there are plenty of games for them on the system too.
Taking a step back, what Nintendo did was huge for the industry and they can roll in their giant stacks of money now as a result. They expanded the definition of the word gamer, thus increasing the population of people that call themselves gamers, and altered the landscape of the video game industry. They've tried to please everyone and include everyone, which is why they called it "Wii" because it sounds like "we". Now they're going to try to be all things to all people and cater to your every whim, so their next system will be called "U" as in "you". It will be interesting to see how that plays out and if they can pull it off with similar success.
