Is the 3DO worth getting/opinions of console.
Hello. Thanks again for the help with the other consoles. The next one I am thinking of getting which probably will not be until Christmas of next year is the 3DO. I was wondering though what are people's general opinion of the system. Is it worth getting. I know some of the games were on other consoles but there are a few that were not or just looked better on it in my opinion like Gex, Star Fighter, plus Wing commander III. So what do you fellow gamers think?
EDIT: 3DO or TurboGrafx-16?

I say if you want one don't wait, start scouting consoles and games now, its not nearly as common a console as it's peers, who's to say you can locate one at Christmastime next year?
Also I understand that despite a $700 price tag at the time the build quality must have been crap because it can be difficult to find a working one nowadays, so there is that to contend with as well.

Depends. Are you the kind of movie lover who likes MST3K? Then you're likely to be the kind of video game fan who likes the 3DO.
IMO, there are two reasons to get a 3DO. First, for historical/hysterical interest. Just to see what they thought they were doing on the cusp of a new technology. Second, as a dedicated Road Rash machine. 3DO Road Rash is hands down the best version of Road Rash on any platform. If you're a Road Rash fan, it justifies the purchase alone.

Just to build on this the system has great versions of Need for Speed, Madden, Myst, Megarace, Street Fighter 2, Star Control 2, Quarantine, Syndicate, Wing Commander 3 and Wolfenstein 3D.Hatta wrote:Depends. The issue with owning a 3DO is that most of the games are much more easily found elsewhere. It's certainly an interesting piece of tech, but it has a very small library of good games.
I will argue to the end that the FZ-1 is one of the best looking game systems ever though, very clean and expensive looking. Also the fact that it doesn't use proprietary video/audio connections is nice too.

I'm interested in this topic as well. It's one of the last few remaining consoles I want in my collection.
Is there region protection on the 3DO? I've gotten different answers from different websites. If there isn't, I would prefer a Japanese console.

There's an arcade-perfect version of Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo, which was the only home release of this iteration, at the time and pretty much the only other reason than those mentioned to invest in a 3DO. Still, you'd have to then go hunting for the dedicated Capcom fighter pad, as the native-3DO pad has only three buttons.

Actually 5. It has trigger buttons on the top.Balasubbie wrote: Still, you'd have to then go hunting for the dedicated Capcom fighter pad, as the native-3DO pad has only three buttons.
The console is completely region free and copy protection free. The GoldStar 3DO has issues with some games though.BoneSnapDeez wrote:I'm interested in this topic as well. It's one of the last few remaining consoles I want in my collection.

There's no region protection, but a VERY small handful of japanese games won't work on western systems as they dont support the letter characters used in some japanese games. There's not really anything you'll miss that you could enjoy without knowing japanese anyhow, so I'd just get a western system.BoneSnapDeez wrote:I'm interested in this topic as well. Essentially, it's an expensive rarity for the sake of just one extra button. Ouchies.RyaNtheSlayA wrote:Actually 5. It has trigger buttons on the top.Balasubbie wrote: Still, you'd have to then go hunting for the dedicated Capcom fighter pad, as the native-3DO pad has only three buttons.
