I think it's totally fine to make it a subgenre and divide the line there. For instance I'm sure I'm not alone in being a big fan of most JRPG's or whatnot, but SRPG's are extremely hit or miss for me, and probably vice versa for some people. In most SRPG's they are completely menu driven games with next to no interactivity, so they definitely play different than traditional JRPG's or whatnot.
And yeah, as you can tell with this post nowadays I like to divide the line between JRPG's and WRPG's as well. Just because they are very different and I think it's easier to talk about things that way.

What did you think of either Ogre Battle: March of the Black Queen or Ogre Battle 64?

Well sure. I didn't suggest that you can't get more specific whenever that's useful. I said he shouldn't be required or obligated to do that. Members of the subgenre are still members of the parent genre as well, by definition.

I haven't hit those up yet, but I love the Tactics Ogre games (even more than FFT), so I plan to get to them someday. Big fan of most of Matsuno's games (Vagrant Story was great too!). The first Ogre Battle looks insane though, people tell me to read into the card system / lore or something before even playing the game, lol.

Yeah, the first one is a beast. I actually started with Ogre Battle 64, and recommend you start there. It's easier, but it still has a compelling storyline, and is one of the most beautiful games on the N64 (thanks to it shunning 3D).
Re: Maybe young people don't understand RPG
Awesome to hear. Isn't that one on the VC? Maybe I can play it that way whenever I get a Wii again someday.
Think the last time I tried some N64 emulation it was very wacky... lol.
(I was stoked to try and play OoT with some texture packs, nothing worked out)

I don't know if it's on the VC, but I do know that it was one of the few games that I don't remember having a problem with emulating. However, to that, caution: I never got far in emulation, because I've always owned the cart. But what I did see was just fine.

Mass Effect and Elder Scrolls games are only barely RPGs. They're more action games than role playing. In fact, these are great examples of the phenomenon. RPGs are getting less popular, so anything that resembles an RPG has the role playing part watered down and replaced with action.

They are both on the VC. The n64 OB has some issues displaying the background layers in battle on emulator, it will look like they are floating in black.
I recommend starting with snes version. I think that one is easier, a bit more basic, and the n64 story is a equel of the snes version. Half the strategy is setting up your squads and then leveling them properly to get the desired alignment. You can make some really op squads which make the game. TO is lso a sequel to OB MotBQ, and you will have characters like lan and canopus and warren.

I realy disagree here... in mass effect, you have leveling and skill/xp system, and you have an extensive dialogue options and branching story impacts. The combat is just action based and not menu based. Which just means they are wrpgs and not jrpgs for the most part.
Besides them being action based combat games, what makes them not rpgs?
