What Anime are you Currently Watching?/Anime Recommendations
Re: What Anime are you Currently Watching?/Anime Recommendations
The difference is that Paprika is good, and Inception sucks. I'm sorry but the second time around I saw it at a friends I was bored to tears, Ellen Page's character completely ruins it. I'm not a huge Matrix fan but I'd easily take those over Inception, plus they had good music that wasn't just pure bass. Oh yeah I went there...

Deciding to return to my Gundam Marathon. Going through Turn-A now, then I'll do 0083 and Zeta Gundam. Watching some Spice and Wolf on the side too. I like the economic focus, but it's a bit slow for my tastes currently.

Turn A is pretty unorthodox but I definitely enjoyed it, Harry Ord rules.
0083... go in for the epic budget, amazing music and visuals. Heh.
Zeta is amazing.

Or was it Fern Gully? Or maybe The Last Samurai? Dances With Wolves?KillerJuan77 wrote:I can assure you that James Cameron would never admit that Avatar draws some heavy influences from Pocahontas.
This common myth is understandable, but I'm getting tired of it. The elements people attribute to Disney's Pocahontas are broad, generic, and have a very long history in storytelling. Even Dragon Ball Z follows the same trope. Cameron delivered his original treatment for Avatar in 1994, the year before Disney's Pocahontas was released, and yet people zero in on that movie instead of numerous much more likely inspirations, such as Call Me Joe.
This excellent article offers a very good understanding of the kind of background Cameron is drawing from:
In Defense of James Cameron
James Cameron is generally very open about his sources of inspiration. He's disclosed the influence Starship Troopers (the book) had on Aliens, and that Avatar took some inspiration not only from Dances With Wolves, but also (and very relevant to this thread) Princess Mononoke-- so we know he's not going to begrudge Pocahontas for being animated, as some others might. If he doesn't admit that Disney's Pocahontas was an inspiration for Avatar, it would only be because it wasn't.
Sorry for the rant.
EDIT: Fixed the URL. Couldn't get it to work right from my phone.

Yeah, I never really understood everyone zeroing in on Pocahontas with the Avatar thing. It's a plot that has been around since long before that movie and has just been a stale Hollywood plot that's been recycled over and over again because it's considered safe and it sells.

And didn't Pocahontas steal from historical events?Czernobog wrote:Yeah, I never really understood everyone zeroing in on Pocahontas with the Avatar thing. Nah, it's not widely known Native American didn't really exist. The Europeans were just fighting Sasquatches. They say one escaped and down south they call him the "Skunk Ape." Pocahontas is the cover up story.MrPopo wrote:And didn't Pocahontas steal from historical events?Czernobog wrote:Yeah, I never really understood everyone zeroing in on Pocahontas with the Avatar thing. Finished all three seasons of Full Metal Panic! Great anime.
But man the final episode is just not fair! I won't spoil it on here so I'll just stop talking. But damn, I want a fourth season now...badly. GAH!
I heard a rumor though that the 4th season might come out at the end of this year. Something about them waiting for the manga to come over to the US....
Dunno, but I got my fingers crossed.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but I highly doubt those rumors. Something about Kyoto Studios not wanting to do it, not having the rights anymore, or something ridiculous like that has kept them from making the sequels.
TSR aired in 2005, so we've been waiting for 6 years... just to be blunt, I wouldn't get your hopes up.
Too many shows that are based off novels end like this though. I imagine we'll never get anymore Crest/Banner of the Stars animated sequels either, even though there's more material out there with the novels.

Mmm, man that really sucks.
Maybe I'll just have to go read the manga/novels.
