Recommended Android apps?

Is your phone rooted, Noise? You should really consider rooting if you haven't already done so.

Some essential apps, imho:

-Titanium Backup: Backup ALL apps, Market links, remove bloatware, etc.
-EasyTether: Tether to Windows, Mac OS X, Ubuntu, PS3, Wii, 360 - no tether fees!
-Google Voice: Great visual voice. Voice mail transcripts are great!
-Swype: Use swiping gestures to slam out mega quick texts (touch screens only) Absolutely essential, imho
-Netflix (no brainer)
-Flash (no brainer)
-Barcode Scanner: Use at least four times a week at Target
-Handcent: best SMS
-Gmail
-RealCalc: Nice little scientific calc
-Vignette: Hands down best camera on Android market......imho
-ES File Explorer: Very useful, simplistic, treed file exploration
-AlarmDroid: It's my daily alarm clock
-Craigslist Notification: How I beat AznKhmerBoi to all the CL deals in our area
-Dolphin Browser HD: the most popular browser on Android - though I'm a tad partial to Opera's new update
-Dropbox: (no brainer)
-imo IM client: how I talk to Hobie, sevin, and mjmjr on the go
-MyCast Weather: The paid version has superb doppler!
-Paypal: essential for racketboy wallet drain on the go
-Out of Milk: My primary shopping list - Supports voice!
-Mint: Great mobile banking management

I would consider these all essential, noise, and use the majority of them daily.

yeah it's not rooted yet. I probably won't get around to that until I hit some roadblock that makes me motivated enough to do so.

But DAMN there are so many great free apps out there, it's awesome.

so far I've installed:

Double Twist - a media player that's better than the pre-installed one.
I Heart Radio - an awesome internet radio hub with tons of great stations.
Juice Protector - a battery saver thingy that gets high praise.
Netflix - obvious.

more:

Angry Birds - duh.
Barcode Scanner - scans barcodes.
Dolphin - alternate web browsers, supposed to be good for Droid.
Goggles - take a pic of something and Google finds it.
Pandora - you know.


also, not an app but on the PC side I installed iTunes Agent which simply is a small plugin that allows you to sync a playlist to yr Droid. So you just have a single playlist called like "My Android Phone" and update it as you wish. Plug in the phone and it syncs.

If you don't already have one, I'd strongly recommend getting a Google Music account. It works incredibly well on Android, even on 3G. It takes a while to upload all your music if you have a big library, but it's totally worth it.

[edit] Also, I just noticed someone recommending a task killer, that's not a good recommendation for any modern Android phone. Assuming you're running 2.0+, which I assume you are, then a task killer won't help at all, and could potentially cause more problems than it solves.

Are there any apps that can read your SMS messages to you? I can't seem to find one.
And with Google Music... what if all of your MP3s are from various sources via the net can this be tracked?

Magic Marker and Shazam are pretty fun to play with. If you have a bigger screen MangWhat is pretty cool too.

I recommend Google Currents; it's the end-all, be-all news app. It takes any RSS feed, Twitter feed, Facebook stream, Tumblr blog, etc. into a news sub-app.

There's a free version, and a .99 cent version. Or you can just pirate it without rooting. I pirated at first, but I really liked it so, I purchased it. Chomp is basically the equivalent of BiteSMS on iOS. It's about 98% as close as BiteSMS. I don't get into customizing backgrounds, or whatever with my SMS prog, but I have to have an SMS app that pops up and allows me to reply without unlocking the phone, has customizable silent vibes, etc.

I s'pose I can suggest some:

Fox Fi - free tethering app. Easy to set up. Boom.
Battery Widget! - gives you a percentage of your battery. Not sure if all phones are the same but mine doesn't show percentage in the status bar, just how 'full' the battery is. This gives you a little android guy with the percentage.
HD Caller ID - gets you full screen call id pictures. Customizable, I have it set to only work when calls are incoming.
Google Sky
Google Goggles
Voxer - good walkie-talkie app
Plex - (not free) Just look up Plex Media server rather than me explaining it.
LogMeIn - essential if you are like me and need to access your pc at the drop of a hat.
Tapatalk - awesome for forum browsing
Speed Test
Fandango - buy your tix for the Avengers right here right now.
Alchemy - fun, simple game.
I agree on Dolphin HD as a browser. It's tits.
Temple Run - free, simple game. Kinda fun
IMDb - this should be the first app you download lol
