I also think that gamepads are actually better for left-handed - most people don't realize as it has been that way since the arcade, but it has been somewhat obvious since I got used to home computer joystics (which I think basically everyone tended to play with their dominant hand) and keyboard controls (which tend to use the cursor keys, which are in my opinion correctly position for the dominant hand of the majority of the population).
I think at the outset in arcade machines, due to whatever reason which possibly included technical limitations of the time, they designed e.g. fire buttons that needed to be pressed with high frequency (in my opinion incorrect design decision, but maybe it started off from tech. limitation). That is basically the only reason for having the "action button(s)" / triggers be on the dominant hand, particularly back when games had 1 to 2 action buttons (and usually 4 to 8 "directions"). Even in modern games with many action buttons you tend to do more advanced things with the directional input.
This is incidentally related to why I defend driving on the right-side of the road as being the right side (pun intended) to drive on. Even in countries with mostly automatic gear shifts, the gear controls, hand brake and other extra stuff should be on the side of the dominant hand of the majority, at least from a usability design point of view.

Or perhaps you could argue that the dominant hand should remain on the wheel whilst they're doing that stuff?Ivo wrote:I also think that gamepads are actually better for left-handed - most people don't realize as it has been that way since the arcade, but it has been somewhat obvious since I got used to home computer joystics (which I think basically everyone tended to play with their dominant hand) and keyboard controls (which tend to use the cursor keys, which are in my opinion correctly position for the dominant hand of the majority of the population).
