I'm glad most of us think the same. I really enjoy playing Super Mario Bros. 2 but it gets so many bad comments because it's different. Just like Zelda II. Another one of my favorite Nes games that gets bashed quite a bit.
agreed.
I just hate combat in Zelda 2. It is terribly slow paced and completely unforgiving in the early game.

Is there really anyone who prefers the lost levels? I don't like SMB2 and yet I've played it for at least 8 hours in my life. I think I've played the lost levels for 5 minutes

I enjoyed Zelda II far more than the first game. Neither of them really compare to most of the later entries imo though.

My girlfriend's mom is actually quite a Zelda fan. She's always preferred Zelda II to the first one.

It seems to be very polarizing for most fans of the first two. I love the original, but the second one has always irked me. Now that I have given it enough time to learn the combat system to some degree I am appreciating it alot more. But I still view it in my mind as a Castlevania title.

It's probably a controversial opinion to have on these forums, but I think the weakest mario and zelda games (besides the CD-i ones obviously) are the original ones. Neither Super Mario Bros. (nor Lost Levels) nor The Legend of Zelda really do much for me at all. I do love the NES sequels to both though, so it's not just a NES thing.

It's a good game on it's own. A good challenge, simple and fun. But if I had to pick just one of the two I would pick the USA one.
Thanks everyone...

Didn't like Zelda II at all. Zelda I is OK. But Link to the Past is just so much better in every way that it's hard for me to play any other game in the series. And I always thought Lost Levels was more like a cheap cash in sequel for the original game. Plus a way for fans to keep playing while a "proper" sequel was in development (SMB3) and have a bit of challenge. Kind of the same thing with DLC really. Lost Levels is really just a map pack for SMB. But luckily NOA redid Doki Doki into Mario 2 because A) the game is fun and B) Just doing a straight import of Doki Doki might not have been as popular as it was if they made it a Mario game.

I haven't played Lost Levels so I can't comment. All I know it's the leap of faith found in Level 6-1, taken from the arcade version. (Or was it 6-2? Don't remember)

I have always thought that Doki Doki Panic was not a particularly interesting platformer. I have never found the level design to be interesting. It's not bad, I just recall it being bland.

Not that I have played it recently.

I had Zelda II instead of Zelda I back in the day. It put me off the Zelda series entirely for the rest of the century.

Back on topic, do you think Doki Doki would get any attention today if it weren't a Mario game? It would probably end up in one of our Hidden Gems lists I think.
