When somebody is playing a game that I might know like the back of my hand, it might get a little frustrating at some points watching them but I hold my breath and let them have their experience with it. If they ask for help though, sometimes I'll give it to them.

However, do you guys ever get annoyed when you're on the sidelines, and there's another backseat gamer in the room? This is definitely one of my good friends, whenever we've got a big group playing, if he's beaten the game and somebody else is playing it... he constantly points out what to do and where to go if they can't figure it out in like 10 seconds. He'll go as far as to explain "why you need this item", or "why you need to make this decision" in a dialogue or something too, so he just spoils crap everywhere to an extent. I almost think this is more annoying than being told to do if I'm playing a game, so in this case you're just watching somebody else completely ruin another persons experience with the game, lol. Terrible. I think there's even been a few cases where I was finally like "Dude, just let them play the game".
heh heh, see this is basically what happens between my roommates and I. I'll be playing something while one is telling me what to do and the other tries to get the other to lay off. :P

Anyways, I think I'm just going to play single player games when I'm by myself from now on. Less hassle it would seem.

This happened to me for the first time recently. It was the last Bay Area racketboy meet. I played Zombies Ate My Neighbors for the first time and Sevin0Seven was telling me what to do. I was probably annoying HIM since I had no idea what to do and kept asking him what the hell to do next.

This "backseat gamer" shit has happened to me a few times, as I'm not particularly GOOD at video games.

Worst incident happened just this June. I was at an anime con playing Super Mario Bros. 2 in a game room. This girl behind me would NOT shut up. She was incredibly patronizing, asking if I was "stupid", telling me I was playing "the retarded way", that her mother was better than me at the game, etc.

I did end up beating the game, albeit after losing a handful of lives. When I was at the final boss battle with Wart, this girl kept telling me I should go BEHIND him and throw the vegetables at him. I can't envision how this strategy would work, but she wouldn't let it go, kept telling me I was awful at the game, that she was better, and so on.

Anyway, once I was done playing I walked off without saying anything. I could have made a scene or said something snarky, but it just wasn't worth it. This is someone who clearly had no social skills, I don't think she would have been affected by anything I could have said.

I'm that person. I love watching other people play games that they are good at, and I will generally keep quiet. Its harder when they are playing something that I'm good at and they are not, but I still don't normally say anything to them.

I can't say I remember it happening to me though I can imagine its pretty annoying.

@BoneSnapDeez - well played, I doubt that girl would have took any notice either

I have a friend like that and it gets very irritating since he plays a lot of games. So whenever I'm playing one and he's watching it's like I'm in perpetual tutorial mode where I'm not blocking enough or taking enough cover - or using the wrong weapon.

I know they mean well - but it just takes me out of the game and then I feel like I'm walking on eggshells every damn decision I make in the game.

If I'm watching someone play a game I know and they're doing bad I might give some hint on how to get past an obstacle or something but I won't completely lecture them.

Anyone familiar with this type of situation? I just needed to rant about it for a bit. :P

I Produce sounds (music) for over 12 years now and most of my childhood friends live in NY which I havent spoke to for sometime now.But in relation to your topic I live in PA now and have met a new friend and let him into my circle of dj-ing and producing.Well you know the dumb fucker took that as him being my manager and telling me what to do and how to sound during my live performances/gigs.I laughed in his face (only because the moron dosent realize Ive been doing this for 12 years) and basically told him to go F* himself. Now he just watches from his window when Im loading up my gear for a gig.So I can see how your situation can be annoying and can be tougher if its a childhood friend.

I backseat game sometimes....but only when my friend is seriously stuck and isn't really progressing....other than that, I just chill and watch them play the game. And...yeah, none of my friends are like that, if they're not playing, they want nothing to do with the television. Kind of annoying sometimes.
