S-Video Image Quality Issues.
I recently purchased a Nintendo SVideo cable, and while it looks sharper, for some reason there is a checkered pattern on most solid colors. Anyone had this issue? Any idea if there is some form of a fix.

What are you playing it on? It might be the way the image is being filtered or upscaled on that particular TV, especially if plasma/LCD.

I'm playing it on a 1080P LCD, it looks fine via composite (just muddy, etc), but chuck the Svideo on (and yes it becomes clearer) and the pattern just kicks in.

Well, it is an s-video signal, so it isn't 1080P, it is just a regular standard resolution image. Do you have another TV to try it on?

Re: S-Video Image Quility Issues.
I would blame the actual video CABLE.
I've gotten some bad cables before and they add that screen door effect to the picture...which is unacceptable in my book.
Where did you get your cable and/or what brand is it?
The ones in the Racketboy store are working pretty great for me (no weird checkers, slant lines or screen door effects). Return the ones you have and get those if you can...
or you can look elsewhere online and get a Monster brand cable, as those are some of the best you can find.

Re: S-Video Image Quility Issues.
I bought them off eBay (new in box) because I saw the same pair of cables at my local EB for $30. At the moment I can play by creating a picture account on my tv and then putting the sharpness right down (this looks better than Composite as there is no ghosting of images,et).
I will have to keep my eye out for a cheap (in price not quality) set of cables.

Re: S-Video Image Quality Issues.
I think the SVideo cable is fine, separation of the Chroma and Luma signals shows the checkered pattern clearer then composite would because of the LCD. How does the image look when you set the HD LCD to 4:3? If still an issue maybe the blurry composite might have to be the compromise to "focus out" the checkers.
To confirm the SVideo cable, try on a CRT which does not upscale, but displays older consoles in their native resolution.

There's a LOT of bad cables out there. In particular the KOMODO cables are crap, but there are several others.emwearz wrote:I bought them off eBay (new in box) because I saw the same pair of cables at my local EB for $30. I'm very skeptical of every one that I buy (though I trusted Racketboy not to screw me over, and was not disappointed
But a decent cable shouldn't cost that much...$10 tops ($30 is definitely too much).
I will admit that I don't have an LCD TV to test S-video connections with. But as I've already posted, I HAVE noticed the bad effects that you are experiencing (and yes, composite/RCA will look fine with the same bad cables, it's just the S-video you have to watch out for).
Trust me though, I would notice the ill effects on my TV even if they were hooked up through a S-video to RF converter. The checkers Should Not be there.

The LCD is set to 4:3 (On the SVideo input) as I don't like playing games stretched. I will have to try it on a CRT when I get the chance. How does the image look when you set the HD LCD to 4:3? If still an issue maybe the blurry composite might have to be the compromise to "focus out" the checkers.
For now I am playing it with the sharpness way down, which blurs the checkers, it gives a better image than using composite, but not as a good as I know Svideo can give out.

Re: S-Video Image Quality Issues.
I've had the same thing w/s-vid on my SNES/N64 (but not cube?) w/my monster s-vid cable. Though it all works just fine on the older TV's. I think your cable is good, just a compatibility issue w/the TV.
I thought I had a faulty super famicom for awhile there, but nope, just either going to composite or s-vid on a diff. tv and no more problems. So, that'd be my guess.
